Do you take insurance when shipping your bike? If you take it, do you declare replacement cost? I just wonder if it is worth it. It is likely not to get lost. So how hard is it to collect if there are damages?

Nope
Have only shipped it in the plane with me, so I cross as many digits as I can and then put it out of my mind as soon as it's out of sight down the conveyor belt.
Touch wood big time

do you pay for shipping with a credit card? might have some travel insurance coverage through the card, but you'd have to call the bank for details.

Chech you renters / home owners policy

I was worried that some day I come out of someplace and find nothing... everything stolen, even the lock, so I checked with my insurance company for coverage. Under my home policy it is covered under personal property automatically with a $100.00 deductible with NO additional cost or I could schedule it on the policy like a rider and pay $300 every year for $3500.00 coverage with NO deductible. "Hmm, I'll go with free thank you" I said. They thanked me for calling and I thanked them for the info. I'm covered.

One year I had to abort a TransAm tour in Newton KS due to a medical emergency. Friends shipped my gear home. The camping gear was in a separate box from the bike. Upon delivery I noticed the gear box had been opened and tent was gone. It was insured to its value and UPS paid for the tent with no hesitation. I did chase the driver down at another stop in town to have him as a witness to the tampered with, re-sealed box.

I've shipped bikes 5 times with bike flights.

I shipped two cheaper bikes from East Coast to West coast. No insurance, shipped to hotel with 24 hour staff, no serious problems.

Return shipping, I had friends bring the bikes into the house. Annoyed that one bike store didn't pack the three speed well after I told them the shift chain needed to be disconnected. (Said they would but didn't).

I did get insurance for a Rivendell I bought in Oregon, no problems with shipping, but insurance was cheap and I did prefer to have them ask for a signature for the nicer bicycle.

Coming to you live from Troy, MT. Took $600 when I shipped with Bikeflights to cover the cost of wheels and maybe a bit more. Figured it would be hard to destroy anything else.

Been having a fun but challenging trip. Rain and cold four of seven days. Saw a herd of elk and heard a fox screaming. Couple of bald eagles and a bunch of osprey, including one with a fish in its talons. Heading off the grid again tomorrow to Yaak for a few days. Grizzly and Sasquatch territory.

Always get insurance when its offered. Not only is theft, lost, damage, possible, its likely. I've had my luggage lost twice on the plane. Those smaller airlines are particularly suspect. One reason why I no longer fly.
