The 33 Goes Zwifting

Misery loves company. The fastest I ever got was when DWJOdonnell and I would call each other out on riding through the spring. We rode on days that I would have otherwise skipped, just because he called and asked if I was riding that day. Sometimes that little nudge is all you need to not be lazy.

Since we all seem to be doomed into going nowhere fast for the foreseeable future, why don't we post up:

1) Your name** on Zwift so we can find/follow you
2) Which world/route you'll be in/doing
3) When you are riding (include your timezone)
4) Rough idea of your workout (if any)

I also think it'd be fun to get a big "keep everyone together" ride going on evenings or weekends. Something reliable that substitutes for a group ride for those that want to "see familiar faces."

**I can see this being sensitive to some people, but I don't care. Anyone with an internet browser and half a brain can figure out who I am in about 10 seconds

Name: Denny Rowe III (Belgian Waffle Ride)

I'll be hopping on Watopia around 3:40 PST to do this sweet spot workout (SS for me is about 4.4 W/kg):

What happened to Odonnell? Is he still out there? I haven't spoken to him in years.

He's been crackin' backs and advancing through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belts on the East Coast.

Matt Brant (SDBC) is my Zwift handle, give me an add.

Schedule is erratic though, with the kid and WFH stuff. Going to try to get back to my 5 AM rides though, that fell off after daylight savings for me.

Will probably be mostly doing z2 (180-200w) up Alpe until I get the Tron bike. I was planning doing threshold work on Sundays and vo2 work on Wednesdays but I may switch focus to more weight lifting/rowing and less cycling for a little while.

Chris Evans (33)

I had to update it because there are so many of us!

I do most of my workouts on Trainerroad but I try to do 1-2 rides a week on Zwift because there's no better interval than having to go over threshold so you don't get dropped. I do a lot of the ADHR and Sunday 100k Audax rides.

Dan Burns (the one with the monkey in blue on a bike for an avatar)

I'm usually on between 5-5:30 am EST. Most days I'm doing a workout imported from Training Peaks with the occasional free ride thrown in.

Zwift Name: Stan Lemon (TT1 Pricks)
Zwift team: Team Type 1, family and friend's supporters
Race class: Technically B, but I often bump my weight up just a touch and race in C so I can be with the most people from the team.

Right now, it's been a couple weeknights per week around 5:00 EST for 90min. If road bike, whatever world has neat climbs except NY. I set the trainer to 100% realistic resistance and either do a couple tempo/SS climb repeats OR do one 25ish minute suffering. For some reason I don't like NY, too video gamey for me. I like the other guest worlds though. TT bike will typically be Tempus Fugit or the "flattest" part of a guest world.

Right now, I'm just grabbing z2 plus a couple mixed efforts on Zwift to stay interested. Not really on a plan. Just grabbing volume after my crash to get back. I'll probably be outdoors for a couple days here solo, nice weather and they let you go ride/run outside if alone.

If we know ahead enough, you can now do a "friend meetup" where you select "stay together".

100000%. I'll hop into NY once every few months to remind myself how much I don't like it. Watopia is so big that I still have to look at the map to figure out how to get places.

I had a group ride on my schedule so I did my second ever Zwift group ride this morning, stage 5 of the Tour of Watopia. It took me way too long to get used to riding in a virtual peloton.

I tried my first Zwift race last night. I entered the C category because I didn't want to go too hard, figured once we get up to speed I could just cruise at z2 and not contest the sprint. What I failed to realize is that they started all the groups together for this one. So, I went super hard to stay with the main bunch, then i realized it was mostly A's and B's, so I eased up and dropped myself from the pack. But then I saw a few C's just sat on, so then i started going harder and joined a chase group, because why not. Seems weird that the winner of the C group can just sit on with the A's.

Anyway, ended up rolling pretty hard. Averaged 258w for 45 mins which is just about what I have my FTP set to (260), but it was it much less steady effort. It was pretty fun having other sandbaggers to chase 😁. I didn't feel overextended, though I gave a good surge in the last few mins. So I guess if I had to do a 45 minute FTP test I probably could have gone a little harder, maybe 270? Not sure how much the variability costs in terms of efficiency and sustainability.

I was planning to do a 2k test on the rower today, hopefully I haven't spent all my coin on that race.

I'll be hitting 45 mins to an hour of recovery starting around 3:45 pm today.

Additionally, I would have thought Zwift would use this opportunity to roll out some big new roads/maps. I haven't really seen anything new in a while, and I feel like I end up on the same "roads" all of the time. New York is a worthless world, London is boring, Virginia is forgettable... Innsbrusk is the only other world I enjoy, and it's super rare on the schedule. I ride to get away from civilization, so why would I want to ride around major cities virtually???

You'd think Zwift would be paying attention and taking notes on how many people are choosing Watopia over the default world. People are inherently lazy, so when 60% of user take the second to click "Watopia" over New York, shouldn't that be an indication that riding a representation of the Alpe d'Huez is preferred over riding some hazy glass above a city park?

While I was riding yesterday, I thought a fun thing would be to invert gravity and make a road that rides down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, then you have to "descend" back out of it. Riders would be in old-timey dive suits, and the light and wildlife would change (accurately) as you went deeper.

I'm not a fan of any of the worlds other than Wattopia tbh, I only join them if I want to roll with a friend that's already doing it. London's box and leith hills are OK but I get annoyed by the subway staircases that are like 15% or whatever, sucks to drop down to like 2 mph if I'm recovering from an effort or something.

I'm hard to find on there. User name is: P. SIMET

I ride when I have time. I ride with no purpose other than to ride. If there's a meetup I might pop on. We have been trying to have meetups every night for our team at like 6pm Central. but then most everyone races after that.
