Had a fun day out with the group on the Turkey Burner ride! Three new members joined some veterans on the outing. A beautiful day and light traffic made for a nice outing. Peugeot, Austro-Daimler, Motobecane, Koga-Miyata and Raleigh were the ridden bikes. Nice lunch at Husick’s just in time to see the USA tie GB in World Cup action.

I ride to the ride start via the American River Bike Trail from the Guy West Bridge at Sacramento State. I leave promptly at 9 a.m. since it is a little under 15 miles to the start. You are welcome to join me there for the extra miles.

Looking like we will have a sunny day with a high of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Ride start is at 10 a.m.so it will probably be in the low to mid 40s at the start.

I was on the trail yesterday (Wednesday) and they had a fence up blocking the trail just north of the Guy West bridge. You can still travel north by taking the levee from the bridge to the next drop down point on to the trail (Howe Ave). They may remove the fence by Saturday as I didn't see any flooding or reason for it. There's also a bit of gravel washout at the top of the switchbacks next to the Folsom rodeo. Just too much gravel to ride over (for me) but walking across wasn't a problem. See you on Saturday in my tasteless Christmas sweater.

Warmed up to about 40 at the official start. Bigger issue was watching out for black ice in the shade because it was below freezing overnight. Warmed up pretty quickly after we got going.

Looks like we will get a break a week from this Saturday after the next round of rain starts tomorrow. Because of mudslides on the upper trail, we will be using an alternative route. (This one has less than 400 feet of climbing!) Same chill, conversational pace as always.

We will stop at Tupelo Coffee in East Sacramento half way through ride for a short coffee/warm up break.

Despite the chilly morning temperatures, 14 brave souls joined the group for our third Saturday ride. A few navigational glitches on the alternate route but it all got sorted quickly. Many lovely and interesting bikes were ridden by our club members, including Howard on his recently acquired Raleigh Professional Mark I, that was a subject of much discussion on the C&V boards when it came up for sale in San Diego. Nice to see this classic wind up in the hands of someone who will really appreciate it.

We are at the six month mark of this new group and it is really nice to see new people showing up on the rides and helping the group to grow! Always the third Saturday in Sacramento. Come join us when you can! Most, but not all of the bikes and riders.

Super bummed that I missed you all. Looks like I missed some great bikes and people. Would love to have seen that Vent Noir, Toei, 3Rensho, and Raleigh Pro up close!

I got sucked into some work stuff, drove like a bat out of hell to get there, but arrived about 10:05. Got a nice ride in on the Medici but sorry that I missed you all.

Like Brigadoon, the bikes will all be back next month, so you didn’t miss anything you won’t see eventually. Rich and I were about ten minutes late last month, but we got lucky and the group was late to roll out. I can’t even blame work- I was just too lazy to get out of bed! See you next month, Bob!

Third Saturday coming up and it looks like we will have beautiful weather! We are back to the original route from September 2022 since the Ambassador construction is done and the upper trail is cleared of mudslides and fallen trees. Route is 27 miles with about 1200 feet of accumulated climbing on gradual bike trail graded pathways. Pace is casual, conversation paced riding with multiple regroups.

Our same start as always, which is the parking lot of the Gold River Town Center strip mall. We meet at the parking lot adjacent to the Starbucks at 10 a.m.

As always, I leave from the Guy West Bridge at CSUS at 9 a.m. to bike to the 10 a.m. ride start via the American River Bike Trail. You are welcome to join me there. It adds an additional 14 miles each way.

Fascinating to see the different fitments - the difference betweent the 3Rensho and the white Raleigh is so interesting. Just goes to show there are no hard rules here, ride what feels great and if it is a bike you love, you make it work

Historically speaking, cyclists from this area have been a very flexible group, literally and figuratively. Check out this photo, taken around 1910, along the American River near Folsom. At the time, most sales catalogs would have shown bikes with the saddles almost touching the top tube, with almost no seat post showing (like Howard’s Raleigh) which remained the standard for decades. I’ve seen bike catalogs illustrating/recommending what’s been termed “French Fit”, or riding the largest possible frame you can deal with, still being printed in the 1960’s. For some reason, the wisdom of the time was that a larger frame was faster. Have no idea where that came from. These folks in the photo clearly bucked that trend, and in 1910, they were riding with their bikes set up with a modern, flat back, “pro race fit” like the 3Rensho (super extended seat post, massive drop from saddle to bars) that wouldn’t become mainstream among hardcore racers for another hundred years. The cyclists in the photo were members of the Capital City Wheelmen, the group responsible for creating the American River Bike Trail. At the time, it was a cinder-path trail that ran on the opposite side of the river from our current trail (from Sacramento to Arden Way) and all the way up to Folsom.

I own only one bicycle that has such a large frame size, and that is the white Raleigh Pro, and it has a 61 cm frame. I own perhaps 18 or 19 bikes, the rest are largely in the 52-55 cm range. I just couldn't pass up the white Raleigh Pro.
