Seattle Bike Swap 2/11/23

For those that may be interested. The event will be at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall on the second Saturday of February. This is an annual event hosted by the Cascade Bike Club

https://cascade.org/rides-and-events-major-rides/seattle-bike-swap

From what I heard last years was a buyer's market. A great place and time to buy and sell.

BF had a big lunch nearby a number years ago, it was a grand event.

2018 BF meet up

After the swap many of us met up at a nearby brewpub.

@Andy_K has already got me committed to going. It'd be great if one of the Seattleites picks a time and place to meet up afterwards.

I don't know what was better, the swap or lunch with the Seattle BF crew. The swap was very good though. I'm looking forward to going again.

I'll be driving the $300 dodge minivan if people want to bring a bike up to sell, ride, swap, etc.

Heck, you could ride with or take the train!!

I'm in that 2018 photo and recall the lunch being a really good time. I'm pleased the sale venue has moved....I can walk on the Bainbridge ferry and use the monorail to get to the Seattle Center.

Does it have a nick name? I'm going to call it "The Shag", does it have the porthole window?

Let's get a picture of the Dodge van!! That is some mighty nice offerings

Real close by there are a few watering holes for a gathering place. Most of those are a little upscale, or complete dive. I would suggest the McMeniman's, I would consider this the Goldielocks of places. Just a block northeast of the venue, good brews if one wants to envibe and/or catch some snacking.

Yes, Vanessa.

Portland has these Tuesday auto auctions called Speeds Towing Auctions. 1/3 of. the cars are from public agencies. This van was part of the Washington State Motor Pool. Had 248K miles but a new motor when I became her 2nd owner. Currently, 422K miles.

I have given rides to everyone, from Greta, to Tony Hawk.

Anyone want to propose a lunch spot? I think I've got the green light to play hooky from child-rearing duties for a few hours and hunt for a tall Gugificazione candidate, so I should be going.

I'm in Seattle but not that neighborhood, so I don't know any of the restaurants. I hear McMenamin's is reliably good (it's a chain), but might be crowded on a Saturday, and no reservations. Same for TS McHugh's, looks great but no reservations.

Since these and a few other choices are in easy walking distance, maybe we could meet at one and all walk to the next if too full. In addition to the two mentioned there is a pizza joint, tapas, couple cocktail bars all with a few blocks.

Notable in 2018 was the bike exchange(?) between @gugie and @Andy_K, from which @Andy Antipas emerged the winner:

I’m a workin’ guy again, and that’s a work day, so won’t be able to attend. Have fun! Get cool parts! Brag about them here later!

Looks like my chauffeur is tied up, anybody from Portland driving up? I could drive, but probably would only go if somebody else goes with.

Not sure how I was the winner, but it was a super fun day out at the swap meet and the C&V lunch after party at the brew pub.

I wish I could be there this year with the Portlandia and Seattle folks. Beam me up Scotty!

Thomas and I are on the fence at this point. I am looking for a 9/10/11 speed Italian wheelset, so maybe that is motivation to go..

Please keep the thread updated on the lunch gathering plan.

I've been to one of the McMenamin's in PDX decades ago and it was good. I'd go.

I'm also socially inept, because those are better suggestions for a group than the ones that stood out to me -- the ethnic places that have good reviews: Tacos Chukis (9 long blocks; maybe too far, especially with cargo in hand), Mecca Cafe (similar story), Bahn Thai, or Maroun Mediterranean.

I've been twisting the arm of RiddleOfSteel, he has recently relocated from the concrete jungle of the Emerald city for greener pastures. He has been on the fence for the swap, but I think he's gonna show.

Yes, McMenamin's, it's not a big as other locations, should be clear enough in the mid day. Good 🍺 as well for those that enjoy the cold frosties with a 🍔&🍟

There are a couple of other forum members may show also, they are not as active as most that have replied so far. I don't remember their handles, I've been chatting with them about various parts and frames I've been trying to clear out.

I'll more that likely will be a late shopper, my desired seek is an obscure French touring frame with questionable paint, lol, or 10sp Dura Ace downtube shifters.

If RiddleOfSteel (or anyone else!) has a frameset that would be a candidate for 650b conversion, 62-ish by 59-ish for seat tube and top tube, I'd be all-ears. Especially if the tubing is nice. I'm looking for a Gugificazione project in the coming year.

I'm bummed that I won't be able to make it to this. I've had it on my calendar for a couple of months, but things just aren't going to work out for me.

If anyone sees a long cage 10-speed Campy rear derailleur in good condition for less than eBay prices, I'd be very interested.
