at least with grr, you can keep your eyes on the (gmr/grr junction) summit prize. not so much with the gmr ascent where familiarity comes into play vs visual confirmation of a summit. both ascents rock tho
and both should be on every aspiring socal climber's to-do list.

not that it gets a lot of traffic but having gmr/grr closed to cars is magic(k)al. should be a monthly affair. like first sunday of every month?
Technical detail...GMR runs from Glendora, to the ridge, and down to East Fork. All of it is GMR. GRR runs from the ridge to Baldy Village

Eric F you are correct. i'd like to say that i'm always moving too fast to accurately read the street signs but we all know that's not the case. it's probably time for glasses.

^^^^^^^ All I know is I'm sitting here with Covid envious of anyone riding on GMR, GRR or Hwy 39.

Something to re-train for post-recovery.

Load up on Vits C, D & zinc. Wash down the zinc with Schweppes Tonic Water (for the quinine) if you can't access HCQ or Ivermectin. Put my parents (91 & 86) on this protocol when they caught it several months back they were over it in 3-4 days!
You'll be better in no time!

a meandering 45-mile ride through city heights, national city, chula vista, imperial beach, south park and north park/metro san diego.
little motivation as it was cloudy (solar-powered here) for an hour or so. then it cleared up and was pretty nice. wind not too bad. rode to two
fave lunch spots and both were closed. not on facebook or instagram any longer (and many businesses were updating the latest on their
sites on both platforms) so missed the memo. adapted and overcame with a steady eddie taco shop (to go) + newish tasting room (byof)
in the old neighborhood. legs felt great yday but like dogmeat today. not too many cyclists out. mostly lamented the lack of scenery compared with yday.
new chula vista bayfront bike path connection addition (from the end of "e" street over to "g" street/marina pkwy) is nice.

I did a quick 12 miles around Griffith Park today, with the intention of trying to place at least on the top 10 on several Strava segments. What sucks is that most of the KOMs are from cycling pros, but there are a few downhill segments where I feel I can do well at. On one segment, I'm a full minute behind the KOM, but 30 seconds faster than the QOM. On another segment, I'm 12 seconds behind the KOM and this is one where I feel I could possibly get close. The last time I tried it, I wasn't even taking it serious and finished the segment in 1:12 minutes with the KOM being 55 seconds. I tried today and was 1 second slower, even though I sprinted hard to the finish. The first attempt all I did was aero tuck most the way and was faster.

While I don't take these segments all that serious, it's fun trying to improve your times at various segment points. Plus I wouldn't mind putting my name on the leaderboard as a recreational cyclist next to guys who actually race for a living!

Another beautiful solitary ride over Santiago Cyn this morning. Wound down Los Alisos over to Lake Forest over the 405 then over to the 133 to Laguna Cyn to Quail Hill Rd. Stopped to de-layer then up through Irvine-Costa Mesa-S A to the SART & back home.
Santa Anas tomorrow gonna plan my route to (hopefully) yield a nice howling tailwind for the last 15 miles or so.

Torrey Pines state park summit at near sunset. Wish I could have stuck around for a bit longer but still had to trek back home.

On Friday my buddy and I explored Red Box Cyn - a familiar ride, but we wanted to see what the rains had left behind. A beautiful day but the trail was a mess, and slow going. Flash floods and rock falls had washed and wiped out many sections, forcing us to carry our bikes. Things improved a couple of miles past Devore as we climbed up to Newton Saddle. We dropped down Shortcut Cyn to avoid the return, but it was also a huge mess - incredible damage and the surface was treacherously loose. The climb up to Hwy 2 was pretty good going but its a steep slog at the best of times. The sun set on us at about the same time as the wind blasted us with incredible ferocity. We made it to Hwy 2 in the pitch dark and then struggled through the wind and blinding dust back to Red Box. Completely nuts. At one point my friend was holding on to his bike like a kite, to stop it from being blown away. About 24 miles, about 4200ft, about 6 hrs. Good times!

39-miler taking in la mesa, mt. helix, grossmont and mission gorge areas east and ne of metro san diego. a bit of breeze from the west.
pretty day. visibility not as good as yesterday but still nice.
final approach to the top of mt. helix totally repaved and with a bonus new separated bike lane. yay!

say what you want about e-bikes but methinx they could be the common link that increases biking infrastructure and awareness.

I've been trying to throw more climbing into my ride loops, so I climbed up to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Toughascent.com says it's:
  • 2nd steepest climb in southern California at a 9.5% average grade
  • #1 fastest descent in southern California
  • #1 climb with the greatest length of > 10% grade in southern California (1.6 miles long)
  • #5 most scenic/spectacular climb in southern California
It didn't seem that steep. It's a big hill and all, but I'm sure there's some way gnarlier stuff in So Cal. My 58 MPH top speed on the descent was f'n terrifying. The pavement is pretty rough, so if you crashed on that road, you would probably disintegrate into just a stain and shredded lycra.

before they installed the guardhouse (pictured) and the walking path on the south side of the road a decade or so ago, the climb was way more fearsome. like harder than mt. baldy ski lifts (even with the altitude)
imho. the final section past the guardhouse and the various parking lots was the definition of a ridiculous "ramp." think of the "bowling alley" ending section of the mt. baldy ski lifts climb but x 3. now with the climb
truncated and defanged, it's still a beast but missing the soul destroying component. last time i did it in dec 2014, it had new pavement but sounds like it's closer now to its' historic chip seal ways. there is a little
tailwind descending and it doesn't take much. hit my personal best top speed of 62.5 mph going down that and it was so chattery/bumpy, the chain got dropped without pedaling/shifting on the descent. also wiped
out at 40 mph on a previous descent. not super scenic but whatever toughascent.com. i'd take either nearby ca hwy 74 or ca hwy 243 instead for scenery.

**edit**the toughascent.com page/stats about this climb was pre-guardhouse in 2010.

hope you get to ride eroica at some point. did a solo century in that area a few years ago that incorporated a lot of the roads thrown into
the various eroica routes over the years. would like to do another one in the area on the olde '85 pinarello after the time change in early march to take advantage
of more sunlight and the scenery/greenery. for dirt in the area, have only ridden kiler canyon and would obvs need to add another 25-40
miles of dirt to bring a solo c-note up to eroica caliber.

First Ride Post-Omicron

First ride in three weeks and managed 22 miles and 2500 feet of climb in the Whittier Hills.
Lungs are still clearing and I forgot my Albuterol so I kept my effort more moderate. Conditioning just not there to do more.
Will ride again tomorrow and add some distance.
Glad to be back in the saddle.

hope you get to ride eroica at some point. did a solo century in that area a few years ago that incorporated a lot of the roads thrown into
the various eroica routes over the years. would like to do another one in the area on the olde '85 pinarello after the time change in early march to take advantage
of more sunlight and the scenery/greenery. for dirt in the area, have only ridden kiler canyon and would obvs need to add another 25-40
miles of dirt to bring a solo c-note up to eroica caliber.
Climbing kiler on a 85 pinarello is heroic.
I understand doing solo rather than the group ride which still may get cancelled again.
Hope you ride it in march and look forward to the report
