I replaced a late '50s Dawes (8-speed Benelux variety) with this years ago. It's Japanese (18-speed Fuji), but English "club" bike is what I was aiming at when I set it up. The frame size is even too small .. I don't seem to recall seeing many, if any, older English "club" bikes with 25" frames out there.

My BikesDirect Windsor TimeLine with an S-A SRF-3 hub. I enjoy it as much as I liked it as a single speed.


The factory cover on the lower right looks good, but it pops loose over hard bumps. Will either remove it or tack it with some kind of tape.

Well, with build season upon me, I find myself wrestling with strong urges to purchase, or try and create a bike that fits in with the machines in this thread. I told myself I swore off cottered cranksets, but damn it if they aren't the cat's pajamas, visually. Perhaps I give an old AW another go. I'll keep referencing here for inspiration. Sweet rides in here. I'd love to see more.

I'm building my own with a '70s Peugeot frameset and a sturmey four-speed and dynohub alloy wheelset. I'm using a modern alloy crank to save weight and make this a commuter / randonneuring machine with modern dynamo lights and go-fast tires. This thread, and the For the Love of English Three Speeds thread, continue to inspire a lot of us.

I thought I would update this thread! Here's my mostly finished Franglish Club Bike. I still have to make ends for the lamp wiring to attach at the dynohub. I'm going to try and use banana plugs to make the connections easier to work with. I have a B&M lampset to install with those, and some SKS fenders. I'm really enjoying the ride and gearing. The FW is really great for my area - the extra "bottom" gear is helpful on hills. Also my first use of Newbaum's cloth tape. It really like the feel of it.

The trick to really enjoying cottered cranks (aside from their obviously nicer looks) is having a proper cotter press. With that (and a bit of care about what you are doing, such as knowing how to use it) you'll not have any worries about extracting a cotter pin or having it properly installed. Its a lot easier than a JIL tapered alloy crank!

You speak the truth. I did just that and picked up a press a couple months ago. Kept the stock crankset on my Super Course, too.

Here, is a project I am working on. I am looking for some advise. I want to keep the Benelux deraileaur, and am building new wheels with 590 sun cr18 rims. I used a Hercules front hub and have a Raleigh hub for the rear. Should I use a 4 speed or a 5 speed freewheel? What is the largest sprocket the Benelux will take? What should I use for a crankset? I want to keep the cottered crank. I am hoping my wife will ride it but she won’t appreciate 46/22 gearing. Any help would be appreciated.

Beautiful! A dream of mine is a proper late-'30s machine from one of the marques that already made them in 23" frame sizing. With a 34.5" inseam I simply can't justify the amount of seat post I'd have to expose on a 21" frame. Just looks weird to me... Wish Raleigh had upped the sizing a bit sooner, or not dropped it all to 21" in the first place. In the early '30s the racy models were all offered with larger frame options!
