Wife, kids and I rode towards Captree earlier today and heading there was into the wind. Only made about 4 miles since no one listened to me that the wind would make things cold. Wife was too enthralled with the sunlight and didn't wear a thick enough jacket and short finger gloves while the kids didn't even bring gloves.
So I dropped them at home, dropped them off at home and went out to Massapequa to ride up to Bethpage on the cross bike, since it had the knobbies I hit some of the trails in Bethpage which were dry, along with a couple of the side trails on the way back.
Stopped by Brands on the way back to look into a new car rack and saw Glenn in the parking lot. Wife wants a hitch and rack on her minivan but they didn't have anyone who could help pick one out. She'd planned to steal my rack and dispose of my minivan but discovered that our new car gives her motion sickness rather quickly. Up side is I get to keep the minivan so we have two cars she can drive. Downside is that this summer I should replace the shocks, struts, rear bushings and all the front steering equipment as it is getting old and worn out. Nothing rattles and clunks yet but its coming.

Did 36 miles, all i can say is the WIND is an evil B!TCH. "It" never relents or gives a break. And when when you head back and "think" you'll have a tailwind... it switches on you.

We did 15 in the woods, avoiding most of that wind. Trails in phenomenal shape, very dry for a warm above-freezing morning. You could really rail the turns.

One more in a streak of gorgeous mornings to ride the trails. Probably one of the last frosty ones, though. Bethpage, GreenBelt, Blue Dot, Tower Loop all bone dry, 16 miles.

Probably down to the very last MTB rides of the spring. I got one of the tandems up the stairs & ready, always a welcome day. Started off nice and frozen, below freezing, but the trails thaw fast now. Just for curiosity I dusted off my Kona 26" hardtail I have not used in a couple of years. A big contrast to my 29er; I felt like it was a kids bike under me, front end too low and me altogether too close to the ground. The full suspension 29er is just very capable feeling when you hit that log pile not quite right.

On the other hand the Kona still has the stickers my kid put on there when she was 4.

OFFENSIVE CONTENT WARNING- yes, that's one of the Muppets, recently deemed deplorable. What a time to be alive.

We did a fun family group ride TOBAY to Captree, some turned early. Got lucky with a NE wind. Pretty busy given that it was still chilly out. It's a nicely designed path, very scenic and I think they did a good job at the few road crossing points.

Out for a ride today and yesterday, the weather is awesome. But there's a ton of debris on the side of the road. Lots of loose cold patch back top, sand, sticks, glass and litter. There seems to be a large number of roads that have been dug up to lay new gas piping. Unfortunately that means a lot of very bad temporary patches that run for blocks and zigzag all over the road.

We need a few days of heavy rain to wash the crap off the road. But we also need the roads fixed.

Cookie monster is sesame street not muppets but I like the way that Piglet is checking out the cookie eating action. We stopped watching the new muppets since some of the shows were not as appropriate as I would have thought for a 6 or 8yo. I don't remember the old shows being as bad.

Haven't gotten anywhere on the new line yet.
Did head out with the kids and got in 20 miles, middle kid wanted to check out his "new" wheels which I'd just finished building. Had an old set of orange kings and built them to a set of 24x 1 1/8 box rims we had from another bike, red spokes and red and orange spoke nipples.

Interestingly we stopped randomly to get a drink, kids can't ride and drink yet, and my daughter found this random coin/token just lying in the grass. My friend confirmed it to be Chinese but he isn't literate enough to translate it so waiting for a response back from his parents with a translation.

Oh well......I still have confidence in my deplorability even without the help of the Muppets. My wife has a talent for finding exotic stuff, she has had me slamming the brakes on the tandems more than once when she spots something. Once found a large coin with Arabic script. I took it to work and showed it to an Egyptian doc I know, it turned out to be Moroccan. He said I should get to Casablanca ASAP to redeem it....."you could buy a candy bar with this!"

Wife took our daughter for a ride to Captree, they did 15mi and actually got to see seals, something we've been trying to do all season. The rest of us headed to Cunningham but left the bikes behind. The place is still fairly wet not that some sections ever seem to dry. Mostly we cleaned out drainage areas, so digging out old rock drains to clear the dirt, saving some of the water to clear drain pipes that run under the track and move leaves. Couple hours of decent, muddy work.

Fantastic day! For the first group ride on the tandem of 2021, headed to Glen Cove for a relatively hilly 41 miler. Mrs Kaos was a powerhouse! But now ready to put her feet up if not take an outright nap.

A bit later into March than usual, but the year begins.

Street sweeper just passed by, so hopefully most of the road debris will be gone soon. Just need a few more days of heavy rain and i'll switch to the Emonda.

Went out with 4 buds this lovely morn for about the 4th "last mountain bike ride of the winter". Welp, this time I was right. Broke my wrist! Dammmit. The ground always wins.

So I'll be out of the game for a few weeks. Now have to practice lacing up hiking boots with one hand.

Dammit.

Fell to my right, and arm was levered between a fallen tree and the top tube of the bike. Envision 2 hands breaking a pencil. The first words out of my mouth were "this is getting x-rayed today". I rode the last mile back to the car one-handed.

I'm seeing an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. Hopefully there will be no need for his carving skills. I'm most concerned with recovery time. He can drill a quarter inch bolt through there if it will get me out earlier.

At any rate I can do roughly 0% of my job, so good thing I have over 2000 hours of sick time to use.

Damn that sucks. Always worry about the trees when mountain biking and usually come out of the crashes unscathed.

I parked at field 5 and rode to Captree, I like that where I park its 14miles each way for a decent length ride. Wind was real hard today mostly out of the north with a slight angle from the west. Just enough to make the ride into Captree a little easier, only took about 40 minutes but the ride back was miserable and took 58 minutes. The turn to the north at the end almost had me walking the last 1/4 miles. Watched a couple of women on TT bikes be blown off the path and even heading out the wind was so north/south it blew me around some. Going back it sent me across the center line a couple times.

Just finished installing a hitch on my miata and on the lookout for an affordable platform rack for when its just me, gotta save gas when heading out solo, not to mention have a more fun drive.
