1978 Trek TX500 - Is it a repaint?

Eyeing this small trek for a friend. The early catalogs don’t say much about colors or have photos of the bikes. Were these painted as requested? I can’t seem to find a photo of one in this color and it just doesn’t strike me as an early trek color, or trek quality (but that could be the photos and a need for a polish). Seller insists it’s original but we know how that goes.

Ah, nice! Hadn’t yet thought to look for other models of similar period. I also couldn’t find “TX500” in a catalog. What was the hierarchy like?

Or do we think this is a tx 300?

The chainstay decal threw me off a little too. He said it’s the shop sticker that the bike came from, not sure I’ve seen that on a chainstay though and can’t quite make it out. More photos:

With the Ishiwata 022, sure looks like a 500 to me. My 300 is Ishiwata double butted hi-ten. Frame and component specs can be found here

Gold MAFACs were swapped in

I have a 1979 Trek 510 also a full Ishiwata 022 frameset. This is a heck of a nice bike. The bikes "above" this in the Trek line up would have had Reynolds 531 or Columbus but the tubing was no better. Given the yen/dollar exchange in the late 70s, this was likely a less expensive tubing set.

bikemig natterberry would you say this bike would take 28s or 32s with fenders? I imagine so.

I'm running 700 x 35 c tires on my bike. I think Trek really dialed it in with their "sports" touring geometry. These are terrific long distance machines.

Alright so looks like at least 28s, which is all he needs. Starting to wish I was picking this up for myself, although way too tiny for me.
