Immaculate 1979 Mercian Vincitore w Bluemel Mud Guards 23"
**SOLD** I picked this up locally but unfortunately it is too big. Based on the condition of the frame and the components, it looks like it was hardly ever ridden but stored in a conditioned environment since new. Not sure I have ever seen a vintage bike in this pristine original condition. There are a few small scrapes that I have highlighted in the pictures but if you have any questions let me know and I can try to upload better pictures of something specific. The Vincitore's are Mercians top end bike with the fancy hand cut lugs through out and campy ends with eyelets. The 70's versions have the wrap around seat stay but they changed that along the way. This frame measures 23" center to top of seat tube with Reynolds 531 tubing as per the Mercian catalog. Top tube measures 22" center to center. I sent Mercian an inquiry based on the serial number, but all they can confirm is that it was a 23" Vincitore built in 1979 ish. I believe the color is Ruby Flamboyant Red with Gold Polychromatic inserts but there are a few red and gold options in Mercians lineup so it is hard to tell. The reynolds stickers have been removed but you can see the outline of them on the seat tube and fork blades. These should be easy to find a replacement or you can ride as is if that doesn't bother you. The red Bluemel's are almost a color match to the red on the frame and will be included with the sale. These are hard to find in any condition, let alone this nice, so if you are looking for that fancy lug bike here it is!
Rear spacing is 122 mm
Originally it came with 27" wheels that I have listed separately. Brake reach with 27" rims is 50-51 mm. Brake reach with 700c is 55-56 mm.

Mmmm, Beautiful frame. I always knew there was gold in the basements and garages of Indy. Something tells me this was a find from the north side of town.

The paint being in such good shape makes me wonder if it had a more recent visit to the paint booth at Mercian.
Very sweet setup either way.

Based on the equally preserved components that were on it, I really don't think so. Unless someone had it re-painted, rebuilt with NOS components and then slapped a bunch of old grease on an old crusty chain.

I have been riding a 2002 Vincitore custom road fixed gear since it arrived new in January 2003. They’re more than just pretty lugs! The lug pattern was called the Vigorelli pattern in the 50s and revived in the 60s, if I read the assorted accounts correctly.
Beautiful bike and fortunately just a hair too small for me. Good luck with the sale!

But it’s almost a once in a lifetime opportunity. If it is your size and you have the means, I really don’t see how you could pass it up (devious smile)…

Oh, that’s a beauty AND my size! Any sense of wheel size and tire width? Built for 27” wheels?
Edit: Ah, just saw you’re selling the 27” wheels separately. Answers that question! But now I’m wondering about brake reach with 700c wheels.

Yeah, I've been wanting to have a platform to do a nice old touring steed... I have some 40 hole phil's and rims, a nice Rally RD, I think I have some Campy triple bolts i just need to find someone (or make something) to make a set of cranks into triples. I have the fronts to make a 1/2 step gearing.. But it would be a stretch right now and, I'm afraid, not ridden as much as it would deserve due to my knees and time... But yeah, this is one on my list.

Rear spacing is currently 122mm. The original Phil wheels with 27" rims have a rear spacing of 125 and they fit easily. With the 27" rims it is close to a 50-51mm reach. With 700c it is 55-56 ish to center of brake surface. The original set of Shimano 600 brakes work well with both wheel sizes. The 700c wheels are at the max reach for that model.

Price drop. $900 shipped. Anyone need this beauty before I figure out how to make it fit?

Hi there, beautiful bike. How wide are the fenders, and what's the maximum width 700c tires that would fit with and without the fenders? And could you tell me what the head tube and seat tube angles are? Thanks!

The bike is a looker even though this is not my favorite color. Still the wrap around stays and lugs are cool. It's tempting but hopefully @nlerner will snap it up. He pretty much has every British bike out there, but definitely needs one more.

I will have to measure the fender width but it looks like you can fit 32c tires with the fenders and probably 38c without. I can double check that tomorrow. Let me know if you have any other questions.

If anyone is interested, I could possibly be persuaded to trade for an equally nice vintage MTB in an 18 or 19” frame. Let me know if you have frames or a complete and maybe we can work something out.
