Need New Freehub ?

I have an old GT Agressor 26" mountain bike with 26" wheels. It has a Shimano FH-RM40-8 rear hub. When I spin the rear wheel without cranking, the cassette doesnt rotate of course when not cranking the pedals around, it remains stationary. It slightly rocks back and fortth. Do you think I need a new freehub ? I wish I had a spare 8 speed freehub to try on it...................

Do you mean it rocks back and forth when the cassette is not spinning, like there is play as if the lock ring is not tightened enough? Or are you meaning a slight wobble when the cassette is spinning, though the lock ring is appropriately torgued. Sometimes, cassettes do have a slight wobble when being used, but not a wobble from looseness. You do not notice it unless you really look when it is in use.

The cassette hub might just need a flush and lube.

It rocks back and forth when the cassette is not spinning. I will see if the lock ring is tight. Highly possible I guess, havent checked it over in quite a while.

If the slop is not enough to cause a chain engaging or shifting problem leaving well enough alone might be the best near term value. I do agree with a flush of old lube and replace with fresh stuff as a periodic service.

So, the question back is does the slop hinder function? Andy

Here is what you need if you want to pick up a backup, if flushing/lube works, or if you need another freehub body. This depends on if you want to continue using this bike.

Freehub Body: Y-3SL98030 (This is the same body used on an FH-C201 and can be found on eBay for less than $25).

You should check the DS cone to see if you need to replace it with the new FH body.
Drive Side Cone: Y-30G03000 (Maybe from LBS, possibly Wheels Mfg CN-R060).

It isn't a bad wobble just a slight one and doesn't affect the shifting. From what I heard a little bit is normal. I will flush/lube and quit over thinking it

thanks guys

How do I remove the freehub?

How do I remove the freehub? I have an 11mm hex key and am looking at the tire from the freehub side. Do I turn the hex key clockwise or counter clockwise?

CCW if you can put the tool in from the outside of the hub.
