Can I put an 11 speed chain on a 10 speed cassette

Hello,
I recently bought a new 11 speed chain by mistake instead of a 10 speed.
Am I committing a heinous crime if I fit it anyway?
Or is it just a case of cutting it down to the right size?
Any help gratefully received.

It should work fine. I used to use 9 speed chains on my 8 speed drivetrains, because I found that they shifted better with the 9 speed chain.

I have that now. When I first tried it the chain spun between the chainrings on the stand so I aborted the mission.

One or two chains later I've tried it again, & it works- fine in the back, occasionally imperfect in the front.

Thank you for your observations.
I've bitten the bullet and sent the other one back and bought the correct one.
But it's great to know your thoughts.

No reason not to send it back even if it was your own mistake as long as it is unused.

Or use the extra chain as an excuse to buy one more bike, this one with 11 speeds.

I run 11 speed chains on a 10-speed bike and have for the last 9000km or so, haven't had any issues whatsoever.

I used a 9 speed chain on an 8 speed bike without issues too. In any case, the wider the chain, the more it will last (at equal build quality).
