FYI Houston: Speed Limit now officially 10mph in Terry Hershey at all times
In a huge blow to anyone on a bike in west Houston and the Energy Corridor, Steve Radack, as one of his final acts on his way out of office, quietly implemented a full-time speed limit of 10mph in Terry Hershey. Constables have been in the park for the last 4 or 5 days tagging people on bikes with radar guns and issuing warnings, and today the signs went up. I'll let you read the post below for all the info. But thus far there have been no official news releases about this - just word of mouth from a cyclist from one of the Constables.
I am beyond livid.

Spring Creek Greenway has a radar speed detector at one spot but there was another one too. Speed there is 15 mph except for horse crossing when it drops to 10 mph.

I've seen a bunch of constables out on the trail lately in a glorified golf cart, Wondered what that was about, must be related because I've never seen them out like this before (if at all, truthfully)

you are correct that’s what they’re out here for. Started tagging people about 4-5 days ago in prep for this.

So much for having a safe place to train...

Yeah, this is a problem for anyone that's using those trails for training and its going to dump a lot of bikes onto the roads around here. Anyone have suggestions of where to ride safely? The ghost bike on Fry seems like a meaningful warning right now.

No one on a bike should be riding Terry Hershey for training purposes - its too full of people and pets and kids. It's absolutely more for use as a commute line, and recreational. I'm one of those daily bike commuters that uses it from Eldridge to BWY8, and I yell at the jackasses who haul through there dangerously. I have NO issues with the Constables patrolling and nailing people for being dangerous - but I have a huge issue with a speed limit that interferes with regular trail use, and commuter use getting people to/from work & school.
All "training" or group ride sections should be in GBP only, and they should tread more carefully in the western section between the horse trailer parking lot and Fry Rd - there are a lot more pedestrians in that section.
But a 10mph speed limit in GBP is like making I-10 35mph. It just is an uninformed amount of stupid.
I do a lot of road riding on both sides of the reservoir (I live in energy corridor). But as you know most people will just not ever bike again than attempt to ride on the road because of their fear.

Blaming everything on "Transient Riders" Is that everyone that doesn't live right off of the path?
$300.00 is very excessive. Someone on FB already posted their ticket.
Sci guy, I think you are one of the rare exceptions of people that need the path. You shouldn't have to be worried about going 1-3 MPH too fast.

Moving to Eldridge
My current commute includes a segment between Eldridge at Park Row and at Enclave Parkway. THP route is slightly longer, but has only one traffic signal delay. Eldridge has the potential for 3 traffic light delays.
I tried THP and the only way I can control my speed is to spin on a low gear with very low effort. I'm not used to riding like that.
I'm going to stay off THP for a while. A lot will depend on how the traffic lights on Eldridge are timed relative to the platoons of motorists and my speed.

I'm also a commuter and use GBP and Terry Hershey to get from Katy to my job in energy corridor. I was out for fun on Dec 11 and had a constable/sheriff yell at me, "10 mph" as I passed him (in GBP). At the time, I did not know that policy had changed and so I took the comment to mean 10 mph when passing (as we all know that's the old rule), so I kept on I riding at my pace. Well, it wasn't until next day that I heard that the rule had changed. In hindsight, lucky he didn't chase me down and ticket me.
At any rate, I do not believe that 10 mph through GBP is fair. That I can think of, there are only a few tight corners that could even be considered "blind" corner (and that would be closer to the soccer fields). Hoping that enough calls or emails or enough signatures on petition can have limit removed?
How can they ticket or restrict a cyclist to a slower speed than they allow a motorist to pass through a school zone!?

maybe they should look at motorists going over 10mph, much more dangerous

I thought I'd share contact information for precinct 3 people. I emailed directly to these to share my disapproval/disagreement with the new 10 mph rule.

constables have been spotted in GBP along the section from the cop-shop to THP, but mostly they've been in THP. Haven't seen any patrols inside the reservoir or past the south parking lot heading west.

FWIW I saw a couple in GBP along the winding part west of the parking lot by the gun range. It was during peak weekend hours when there were lots of walkers out so it made sense. I tend to ride off-hours on the gravel/dam trail and never see them at all lately.
