It's policy on other internet sales forums I frequent that you MUST post publicly with your intent/interest before PM'ing to avoid this kind of hassle for everyone. Someone's choice to PM you directly without publicly posting unfortunately - and probably unintentionally - created a dilemma for you, and a disappointment for me.
One of the truck forums I'm on actually bans members who don't follow it. They popped me with a warning when someone posted with interest and I mentioned a sale was pending. Seemed a bit over-the-top at the time, but I kinda get it now.
