Hand protection, some padding, and it allows me to reach down while riding and wipe debris off the tire before it can cause a flat.

Why use gloves?
The back of the gloves are a nice place to wipe my nose or sweaty forehead. Plus gloves make me look cool especially if the colors coordinate with my kit.

I wear them because I have pretty severe arthritis, if my fingers get cold I am in agony. And nothing like gripping metal rods to make your hands cold-even if they do have rubber padding. Now if they were heated......
And during the winter, mittens are a much better alternative to gloves.
I must have 10 pairs of gloves, from thin ones for warmer days, to insulated waterproof mittens for the 30 degree rides-OK anything under 40 degrees. I'm old, I get cold easier.

A friend once told me that without gloves, my girlfriend would have to wipe my butt for quite some time. Your hands are usually the first injury when you take a spill. Dress for the crash, not for the ride.

I wear them to lessen the road buzz from my aluminum bike with CF front fork. In the last year I've bought a couple of old steel bikes with cotton bar tape and find I don't need them. Apparently I wore gloves in the 80s to look cool.

I used to wear gloves but not these days.
Have never had issues with sweaty hands slipping off bars but could see that being a factor for some people.
Never understood the wiping snot thing in warm weather though. Seriously?
And if it’s such a thing why wouldn’t you carry a clean snot rag in a jersey pocket or somewhere else easily accessible?
