PSA - Society of Three Speed membership
The Society of Three Speeds (S.O.T.S.) is the mindchild of Portland local Shaun Granton. Among other things, he's an illustrator and lover of many things vintage. I reported on a bike build/bike ride a couple of years ago.
I'm pimping new memberships. For $20 you get more than $20 worth of swag, and postcards on occasion with 3 speed challenges. This is about as low key a "club" you can join. If you like short rides, urban and country, stopping to make coffee and take in a view, and don't mind getting off and pushing up steep hills, here's a group of like minded people.
My typical riding style isn't in line with S.O.T.S., but I really like the concept. I have a couple of IGH bikes, and commute on them often. I also like the old school postcards, and stuff coming in the mail.

Do I have to own a three speed to be a member? I like three chainrings on my crankset (it's like having ten 3-speed drivetrains), and I have been known to push my bike up steep hills.

You need to expand your collection. Most any IGH bike will qualify. No chain slappers, however.

Does he discriminate against a proper Italian 3 speed? It has more panache.

Sounds like a proper English 3 speed.

I like the idea of this club as I need an excuse to ride my '69 Robin Hood. It is one of the cleanest bikes I have ever found and it needs to be dirtied up a bit riding. Everything on this bike down to the tires (except for the saddle) is original which gives you a good idea of how many miles it has seen. I like the hi and low beam on the factory lighting system.
I have a bit of a conundrum with 3 speeds. I don't like riding one with a helmet (it just doesn't seem right) and I don't like riding without a helmet. So the RH has just sat around which seems wrong.
I'm confident that gugie can provide a smart ass response that will solve my conundrum!

3 speeds are the best long ride bikes! Tommy Godwin is proof of this! https://www.tommygodwin.com/
I am a member of SOTS, and may be the only one that has ridden a double century on a 3 speed...

Three Speed Police here, sir: I'm afraid that Mr Godwin is ineligible to support your contention. For 8 months or more of his record year, he used a S-A 4-speed medium range. Unless I misunderstand, it seems that the whole point of the organization is that 3 speeds are just the right number! You don't need to convince me of that, though I do have a S-A S5 lurking in my parts stash for a particular build. But I don't think I'm going to try to challenge Tommy Godwin.

Rather than be the arbiter of S.O.T.S, check the link above and ask Shaun.

Well, Shawn is a frequent BF contributor under @adventurepdx, though he doesn’t necessarily need to join the fray here as arbiter of IGHs!
