No decal on this one after the repaint, no canti's either. Seems like from my digging Jim used more Columbus later on.

Here's the bike, JM027 when he built it for himself with the decals on the fork.

Reynolds 531 T-Shirt

I think I'll wear this today, as I head off to do a bit of shopping and banking.

Happy 531, Memorial Day & B-day to me!

My contribution to the 531 celebration today which also coincides with my birthday! Unfortunately, the '83 Trek 700 had a flat this morning so the Tange Prestige Prologue had to play substitute on the 50 miler flogging my riding buddies gifted me his morning.

Just realized the brakes are mounted reversed...very interesting use of space and likely much improved braking...

So the rear brake had to be mounted in front of the bridge to accommodate the rear rack which had come with the bike and was designed for it when it had the canti's as it was built. The PO before me had never mounted it and when he took it to Sellwood cycles to consign it, they said a Merz with custom racks that aren't on the bike?!

So they turned the brake around and got the rear rack back in it's rightful place. Funny thing is I have had plenty of people say the brake can't be that way and of course I say "really, how is it ok on the front then", again, and you're right, it works just fine, gets a lot of funny looks and plenty of comments like I said.

Jim said he couldn't remember why he removed the canti's but I assume it was that they were out of fashion for the market of the day.

Another funny thing is the green that it was originally painted is years later referred to as "DiNucci green" that they used at Speciallized while he was there but this bike was built in 1973-4 so I think it was Merz green before that.

I took my 1979 Trek 510 with its Ishiwata 022 tubing out for a 28 mile ride today. But it's 531 day. Now I know why I felt sluggish on the ride. And I was worried that I was just out of shape.

10 miles and a 1000' of climbing on my Super course for 5/31 day! Much smaller ride than I'd have liked, but I'm hurt, and it was a lot more than nothing!
