Dia Compe Caliper Question

I am building a 1979 Centurion Super Elite with Dia Compe brakes. The calipers have black triangles connected to the blocks that the Dia Compe catalog lists as "supports". Does anyone know what their purpose is? I have seen these on other bikes and I have never liked how they look.

I'm pretty sure they're just to pinch the caliper to ease tension on the cable. They're definitely not necessary.

No, they're guides to ease replacing the wheel when you're ready to re-mount the wheel. Helps for speedy changes in races. Help(ed).

read this. a couple of other good points for validating the usefulness....

i always thought they're pretty neat looking myself. i was pretty jazzed when i got an '82 trek with those dia compe G's and wheel guides. they are indeed handy for setting brake cables/pad to rim clearance, if nothing else.

edit: otoh, they are more useful as a guide when trying to install the rear wheel and lining up the freewheel to the chain and dropouts. that is an instance where it's easier for the wheel try to hang up on the brake pads between the spokes.

Helps for easier changes when not in a race, as well.
