This is a “Not Saved from the Dump” post, unfortunately. But with a cool ending.

First, a Miyata buried behind a railing. Don’t know the model, but I love the color!



Next, a Hardrock high on the pile. This would be great for my daughter, as she is outgrowing her 24” Trek. Alas, no salvaging.



After a grim survey, at least my spirits were lifted as this guy backed up to the pile.



What’s the oldest truck you’ve seen at the dump?

Not so much that I saved it from the dump, but definitely my catch of the day.

A nice used B17 with lube and a wrench(I have several Brooks saddles, but never have owned the proprietary tool).

And my first ever Nitto bottle cage.

Too bad it's inaccessible. I think those Specialized "Flag" cranksets are worth something.

Nice catch today from the local bike collective:





I think it’s a 1990 or 1991 Bianchi Axis with Tange double butted “superset II” tube set. Appears to be bone stock and all original minus the tires. Sun Tour XCD/GPX components, 3x7 with the sweet command shifters inside the brake levers. Handlebar is bent but I have a plan to remedy that - visit the local bike collective!

Saddles? I learned something new today. I've always put on my shorts, so they don't stick to the seat.

You may want to throw away the tool. Almost everything I have read from experienced Brookies say NOT to tighten the nut on the saddle!
NICE nitto cage and I love the Obenauf's. Way good leather treatment.

That is truly rather pretty and in crackingly good nick! Great find.
Edited to add: It is a very practical tool that you should get loads of road (s)miles out of.

I bought two bikes today - the first was not that great of a deal, a '89 Schwinn Impact that was in a worse shape than I had expected. Should've tried to haggle down the price, ended up costing 70 € plus a 4.10 € train ticket.

Then I went to pick up a used Selle Italia suede saddle for 10 €, and the guy started offering some other stuff he had around. I snatched a small sun-bleached '91 Marin Muirwoods frameset for another 10 €
This pic is not mine but the paintjob is similar, just very dirty and sunbleached to white in many spots. Absolutely hideous, but I expect that those in the know would consider it a crime to paint over it
I would appreciate info about what components these came with, and where to find a top cap for that quill stem (mine has it missing).
I think I'll build it up using the ugliest mostly period correct non-original parts I can find to match the appeal ;D



I was actually ogling at another Marin before I decided on the Schwinn, but it was too far away ;(

It's BOTH! It's also my second entry this year in the Clunker Challenge. I think I can get it up and running - and running well, at that - within the $100 budget. I honestly don't think it's ever been cleaned in its entire existence, but I hope to get most of the filth off of it soon. There is a surprising amount of rust in odd places. This is the first time I've ever encountered a rear brake cable housing that has bonded itself to the inside of the cable tunnel on the top tube - fortunately, I was eventually able to separate the two.

Not so fast and I will probably get shouted down on this but I have used "the" wrench to loosen a couple of new ones just a bit to speed up break in time, tighten them back up as soon as it starts or before if my backside gets onboard sooner which it usually does.

I have at least 15-20 Brooks of every state, NOS, well broken in, old and not broken in, and many in between, Pro's, Team's, B-17's, B-17 Specials, an Imperial and a couple or 3 Cambium's

To be honest, I have very little trouble with them, height, tilt and adjustment have more to do with it than anything. On hot, cold, long rides I some times use a cover for extra slip or cushion depending on the current state out back.

In other words, I have never met a Brooks I didn't like, ymmv.

I have used my Brooks wrench primarily when repairing saddles; the first time when I added an auxiliary rivet behind the right front rivet, the second time when I replaced a broken cantle rivet. Both repairs required removing the nose bolt and the tool was invaluable for that.

Put the tool someplace out of the way where it’s not gonna get lost...if you have Brooks seats, someday you’ll need it...if you tighten the nut too much, you can also loosen it...I’ve only had to use my wrench once with all of my Brooks seats, bikes, past and present...you’ll know when it’s the right time to use it...
