C&V Rides that AREN'T Eroica?

Much as I love the idea of the Eroica rides, I also find the prospect of actually riding one a bit more challenging than I'd like. Particularly, I'm a roadie. I like pavement. I like the feeling of control pavement and good tires give me.

So, I was wondering whether there are similar events, even centuries, largely or exclusively for C&V bikes? I'd think there should be something here in the Bay Area, but I haven't seen anything.

There's Cino, but that's in Montana and I've heard that it has more gravel than Eroica. I did pose this exact same question about seven years ago and someone on the forum responded "why don't you organize one". So I did, and got about a dozen takers to ride Old Tunnel Road, Redwood Road and Pinehurst Road in Berkeley/Oakland. Subsequently I've become friends with several of those folks and we ride about once a week and once a year usually ride what we call "Marinica" which is a primarily vintage ride in Marin a week or so before Eroica. Note that these rides typically only have between 2 and 5 people so they're probably not exactly what you're looking for.

Yeah. Here's how non-Eroica C&V rides work in my experience:

1) Pick a route
2) Pick a date
3) Pick a place to have food and/or beverages before, during, or after
4) Invite a bunch of people
5) Enjoy

You won't get anything as big as Eroica, but in practical terms it's hard to talk to more than 10 or so people anyway and that's easily achievable with the above steps.

I've thought it would be really cool to have some kind of rotating Bike Forums event every year so we could meet members from other regions and discover some of their favorite rides.

It's tough to get urban roads closed without lots of political clout and that means big money from 'important' corporations. It's not likely C&V will be a draw for those people. You can always do the RBC GranFondo ride from Palo Alto and ignore the carbon footprint around you and seek out other riders on steel.

Or just do what Andy suggests and make it grow...a little. Once it gets big, it gets dangerous.

as Mr. iab and Andy K suggest, it's not a bad idea to just throw together a ride, promote it through whatever methods are available, and see what happens.
I've been doing this for a few years and it's been a lot of fun! The group is a mix of local and semi-local folks. Some folks are new to the hobby, while others are veterans.
The important thing is to make everyone welcome, provide the opportunity to chat and get to know each other, and have a nice time.
Donuts help.

Way back in the mid-2000s, the NorCal subforum used to be a hotbed of ride organizing. Multiple posts a day, and a couple group rides every summer. That seems to have gone away since 2010. I'm not even sure how I'd find people.

@genejockey - There seems to be a lot of Bay Area folks on the C&V forum. I would think we could pick a day and course and let people know . We could do something like the Pasadena Ride, or the San Diego ride (just saw it posted) where it's a monthly ride that we post on the C&V forum. I could even see a rotation of East Bay, South Bay (or Peninsula), and North Bay.

I've been wanting to put together a Tour De Palm Springs group of C&V riders. It could potentially be pretty huge due to the amount of people that register.

Hmmm. Like "Festivus, For The Rest Of Us", we could start "Not-The-Eroica, For Those Not Feeling 'Eroic"

Which part? Low social needs introvert? Or lazy to boot?

I would like a vintage bike ride where you don't have all the ridiculous rules. Just vintage frames.

Southern Californians are lucky. There has been a monthly vintage ride in Pasadena CA for decades. There is also a monthly vintage ride around the San Diego Bay. Both are on paved roads, both are more about camaraderie and enjoyment than anything else. Neither is strict or judgmental regarding equipment rules.

This. Kinda seems like how we roll here in the PNW. I'm hoping to ride Cino this year, but that's about as large an event as I would want to ride. L'Eroica-sized events? No sir, no thank you!

Isn't the San Diego ride this weekend? I would love to do that one because they welcome other bikes and my wife rides an E-bike for her disabilities but can keep up with normal bikes. Some have issues with E-bikes and I get it but for her it is a necessity. I am full on 'period "correct" as they say but that is my choice. I would have to plan out the San Diego ride for a weekend when my daughter is around, she lives down there and I live in Ventura County.

That's exactly me too. I mostly ride by myself. I tried riding with a local group, but didn't like the vibe. Plus they're geared (pun) toward racing. I ended up riding by myself anyway.

I usually do the charity rides on my vintage bikes...It's the only ones I own. There are a lot of organized charity rides in Texas, but I'm not finding many here in Arizona. Last couple years I rode Hotter Than Hell on my Cannondale, but COVID squelched those plans. Next year I might ride the Shiner G.A.S.P. But none of these are rides are C&V specific.

I was thinking of trying to start something up in the Bay Area, maybe around Monterey. The problem is, I have a few friends that I know would want to do it but they're wildly different when it comes to how they ride. Some are monsters and would want a soul crushing ride and some want an easy 10 miler. The idea of making a route that would make everyone happy would be tough.

Wouldn't the mythical French Fender Day be considered a vintage get-together/ride? I haven't been but it seems cool.

We have the Santa Fe Century in New Mexico. It's a century for any bike (which gets it paid for and gathers riders) but they have a vintage show and ride incorporated into it.

With all the interest in Mid-Century Modernism in Palm Springs and the number of people that show up in February for Modernism Week, you might have some success putting together a ride for mid-century bikes. I think I'd keep that loose enough to include bike-boom machines though, the idea of riding a Sting-Ray up to the top of Little Tuscany doesn't really appeal.

Yeah, I was one of those. I started the SlowPoke series which featured non-Homeric distances and route profiles, reasonable pace and regular regrouping. In other words, the kinds of rides I do myself. Fun and friendship was stressed, dropping hammers was discouraged.

All I ever did was announce was announce a time, place and route in the NorCal forum. We had anywhere from 10 to 20 show up.

One thing I learned: For the organizer's sanity, don't make it too democratic. Solicit input re when people can show up, but do not put it a vote. Set your route, set your time, and let the chips fall where they may. If you try to cater to everyone's wishes and perceived needs, you will make your self and/or , with a side of . Most folks are great, but there are always a few who will drive you crazy if you let them. Don't let them.
