New cassette

I have a used 2003 Specilized Sport road bike and it needs a new chain. It has a 105 rear derailleur. So I decided to replace the rear cassette at the same time. The existing cassette is a 12/25 and the one that I ordered is a 12/28. After i ordered, should have asked first. I got worried if my existing derailleur will work with the larger cassette ring. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Depends on the specific model and version of your rear derailleur and front chain ring sizes.

If they are Shimano DR's and you can come up with the model and version numbers then you can easily find that info. SRAM it's a little harder to find, but probably because I don't have any SRAM stuff so I have not gotten use to their website.

Highly unlikely you'll have any issues. Re-check your high and low limit screw settings after installing the new cassette. Current chain length should also be OK but double check to be sure.

Depending on the particular 105 model it may have a specified maximum cog of 27T. However, a 28T should be no problem a Shimano is very conservative in their ratings. BTW, size your new chain for the new cassette as it may require an extra couple of links for the 28T cog.

The "B" screw will likely need adjustment also. Don't forget to size the new chain properly.

FWIW, just in case, back in 2003, Shimano 105 I think(?) was still 9 speed. If you found a 105 cassette for sale, it's probably not likely 9-speed.

Yes, I now have a 9 speed cassette and what I ordered is a Shimano 9 speed cassette. It is coming out of Great Britain slowly, but it is coming.
