He was kind and generous, always enjoyed a laugh, goofing around with friends, and had a zest for life. I can still picture him giving the hang loose sign and shouting, "Yeah, buddy!--one of his oft-repeated catchphrases. He was also a loving son and a tremendous older brother to his kid sister. On top of that, John was also truly an exceptional cyclist, the most naturally talented cyclist I've ever known. His first love was mountain biking but he also trained and raced road bikes. I truly believe he had the talent to compete in the Tour de France, or any other World Tour caliber races. He'd often show up to our fast-paced club ride on a MTB and dust us all. He won the Junior World MTB Championship in Italy before I left for college. Then a few months later, he had a devastating crash during a downhill MTB race in Vail, CO, fractured his skull and spent 5 days in a coma. I did not keep close contact with him after college, but I know he suffered from brain trauma and was never the same rider or person afterward. He's been on my mind all day, and I've shed quite a few tears. When John got a newer Parkpre Team 925 MTB, I ended up with his original Team Parkpre MTB, which I still own today. It was only fitting that I took out John's old MTB and hit the trails in his honor today.

No pix but a great ride yesterday. My Grand Daughter (9 yrs old) is visiting for the first time since 2019. Missed coming here last summer "for some reason". I borrowed and fixed up a 24" Trek 220 mtn from a friend and off we went to Valley Forge Park. 16 miles in perfect riding weather. She did just great even though we doubled her longest ride so far. Slow but oh, so nice. I'm getting the hang of this Grandpa thing.

Going to cycle the Perkiomen trail next week. Meanwhile it's all equestrian activities with Nana.

That’s a tough stretch for you there Jeff. Along those lines - idle thoughts I’ve been having recently. A forum member recently gifted me a huge supply of spokes and there were some Hoshi bladed spokes with an “L” bend rather than a traditional spoke head. Researching these, it turns out there’s a tool to put the bend into a straight spoke. Those are kind of handy in that they’re easier to replace on the road on a rear wheel. Maybe nice to have for remote touring or long rides on old wheels.

Anyway, today weather is much cooler. I channeled me some gaucho777 and took the DeRosa out for a ride around the edge of town. This is an old horse farm that’s been turned into a fancy home development. Blue Ridge off in the distance. Also just realized gaucho, I missed your last post. Condolences on the loss of your buddy and a well done on your remembrance of him.

Also finished off today’s riding with a trip to the whole paycheck for some supper supplies.

Playing around on some new trails I’ve found in town. Very New England with the rocks and roots. Good tool for the job.

If those are in the neighborhood of 296mm, I would be very interested. My LBS had little in the way of period replacement for the Wheelsmith double-butted spokes in the Davidson's wheelset - so the mechanic used a bladed DT. Test ride is tomorrow. This one has a conventional head, but I've had a wheelset with Hoshis and am familiar with that hooked approach. You're absolutely right that they'd be the perfect on-the-road spare. I think you'll be getting a PM soon...

That is beautiful area. Some days it could be a real pain but I miss the drive from Scranton out to Mehoopany and once in a while to Towanda.

It really is!
Was it winter driving? That, for sure, can be a big pain here.

Year round. When I used to work for JB Hunt I might run out there a few times a month or even week.

Great ride today. It’s a beautiful day around 75 with very low humidity, but a bit breezy for my taste. I did however have a great ride and at the 13 mile point I was averaging 3:39 a mile but then started losing my groove and the final stretch headed home was into a breeze

Sorry I’m recycling a pic, but today’s information, of my fabulous ’90 Proto with Columbus MAX tubing.

Yesterday my would-be riding partner on a planned ride had to cancel at the last minute. Having spent the morning contemplating the fact that I had planned a route with more climbing than I wanted to do, I needed some motivation to get out of the house. After a few minutes of thinking about it, I came up with a new route that had built-in motivation at the turn around point, The People's Pig in Portland.

I don't know if it was the delicious porchetta sandwich or just the beautiful weather, but on the way back to Beaverton I found myself appreciating much of the beauty of Portland that I've mostly come to take for granted.

Moda Center

The creatively named Steel Bridge with the Portland Convention Center in the background

Whatever this is

The Burnside Bridge and a bit of Waterfront Park

A reminder that in Portland you need to be careful when and where you ride

The OHSU School of Dentistry (I had to look that up) with the Tillicum Crossing Bridge of the People in the background

A view of the main OHSU campus from the Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge

A good friend of mine has been hospitalized at OHSU for the past three weeks following a terrible bike accident, so this was a particularly somber moment for me.

I feel like the sign here was overkill.

Mmmm....Peoples Pig
A delicious incentive.

The most interesting parts of my ride yesterday were at the beginning when I rode through the closed section of Reining Road
A view from the beginning of my ride
and admiring the Elk grazing just outside North Bend at end of my 94 mile training ride.
The view near the end of my ride at about milepost 89..

In dedicated preparation for Cino, I made two beer stops along the way, having a cold one at the North End of Lake Washington approximately 53 miles in and another in Preston at about 78 miles.
That last pint just before the hardest climb of the day up to Lake Alice on the Snoqualmie Ridge. Oh the pain I endure for the sake of Cino....

I’m a little jealous of you folks that have tasty treats and drinks on your rides. My scenery is nice, but usually ain’t nowhere plush to refuel until I get back into town

It was a gorgeous day for a ride. A little warm, but not too bad. I started with a few miles of warm-up before riding up into the Berkeley hills via Spruce, then a turn south to follow the ridgeline along Grizzley Peak, before dropping back toward Oakland via Skyline & Butters. Then I made my way toward downtown Oakland for a loop around Lake Merritt and the Bay Trail on the way home. Almost all the climbing in the first 15 miles, before some nice long descents and a flat, scenic stretch along the bay to finish. Just over 30 miles and ~2,700' climbing. Only one photo by Lake Merritt.

Yeah. My rent was $118/month.
Plus, on a clear day, I had a view of Mt Hood!

After complaint about the lack of good food stops on my routes I decided to do something about it today and picked a route with food. This was a tour of the south western “suburbs” of Charlottesville, Batesville, Crozet, and White Hall. Stopped at the Market in the heart of downtown Batesville for a sammich. Half century on the Merckx Century.

MMPCT - Mitchell’s Mortuary (not really very) Pro Cycling Team

I thought about scarfing a peach off the ground but thought that might not end well, especially with 20 miles to ride.
