Spotty Paint When Wet

SOLVED: It's a bad wax job.

Now that the bike is dry, I can rub the old wax off with my finger. It's peeling up like dried school glue on a small child's hands.

Thanks for the help everyone

Hi, folks.

Among others, I've recently acquired a 1975 Raleigh Superbe Gents Model DL-24 with a 21" frame in bronze-green. I've noticed that the paint comes down with a case of spots when the bike gets wet (see attached). The spots in the picture were caused by plain water and they fade and disappear as the bike dries. I've never seen this happen on any of the other Superbes I've owned or worked on, or any bike for that matter.

Has anybody encountered these sort of spots before? What are they? Can I prevent them from recurring without repainting the bike?

EDIT: imgur . com/gallery/4rl1ghH

Thanks for the tip to post the gallery, Iride01

I'm afraid I can't post URLs to other sites or uploads photos because I've not yet made ten posts on the forums.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Spots appear under droplets of clean water. They don't wipe off.

You can make the URL not a URL. Just paste the link as plain text in your next message and remove the https:// and put a space on both side of any . in the link.

Most of us can figure out how to make it work again.

Do they disappear after a while?

I might think that the previous owner put some wax on it that really wasn't automotive type car wax that expects water to get on it. Or it's just more badly oxidized paint than it looks.

Pretty bike. I had a similar bike when I was 9 or 10 back circa 1970 maybe 1969. It was red.

They do disappear, yes.

They appear under droplets and fade as they dry.

Looks like basic water spotting. This might help:

My dad’s shop rented those Raleighs on the Stanford campus. We kept the paint looking decent with Turtle Wax.

I find it perplexing that they disappear completely when they dry. They don't stick around like other water spots I've seen on bikes and cars.

Thanks for the tip about Turtle Wax. I may try waxing the bike after I wash it next.

Just be careful when waxing I've found on my 68 the boxlining can be rubbed off with aggressive waxing.
