I Love It When I Find Stuff...

.. that I didn't know I had.
I've been putting off ordering a new freewheel for my big green bike. It came to me with a 52/42 & 26t bailout. I put a 13-28 on it that I had, and suffered a bit on the big hills.

Well, in rummaging through wheels for my kids mixte, I found this 14-30 Winner Pro. So happy to not have to spend for a lesser piece.

I am sure most of you have unearthed greater treasures that you'd forgotten about...

Seems like a daily occurrence now. A year away from my stuff and a bad memory equals little Christmas time on a regular basis. Today was a DA crankset!

Forgot all about these until Mrs. Me found them in the back room, under the clutter that we keep in the back room...

If gear spacing is a concern...
If that freewheel is 14-16-19-22-26-30, and you've got an extra tooth of wrap to spare, a 53T chainring may improve the quality of the 1.5-stepping between the middle and big rings while simultaneously slightly widening the gear range. 52-42 on the left, 53-42 on the right:

52-42 pairs well with a standard 14-16-18-21-24-28 6-speed freewheel, although obviously that might not be optimal if you're trying to maximize low-end.
