Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which is not going to happen. The engineering and construction, assuming it would be possible, would be extremely expensive. You'd also have land acquisition costs and public outcry over land taking.

Time to give some new fangled tech wizardry a try.

Interestingly, the rails are not level with the saddle surface. Which should I level as a starting point?

The tracks in question are hazardous not only because of the angle but also the huge gaps between the asphalt road and the tracks. The combination is not good. I avoid this crossing, but if I have to cross it nowadays I often will stop/put a foot down.
Considering the relative inflexibility of trains, it probably makes more sense to move the road so it crosses the tracks at a right angle.

Put a small board, tablet, etc. on top of the saddle, and level that.

EDIT: Also, never ride this saddle naked.

Correct. If anyone was going to fix that, I'm pretty sure that that the highway jurisdiction would have to realign their road, almost never the other way around. The only time that I've eve seen the RR change an alignment is in the case of massive reconstruction like in the case of a new interstate or something and I'm pretty sure they aint paying for it.

Sweet! I'd like to try the similarly constructed Specialized Power Mirror (I think that's the name), but that kind of coin on a saddle is a tough pill to swallow (unless I was unable to find a saddle that agreed with my ass, otherwise - then it's money well spent). Let us know how you get along.

My thing with old bikes now is like my thing with old watches - they're SO CHEAP for what you get, if you know how to work on them! But what stops me on the bikes is that my 9 bikes take up about a 7'x7'x7' cube, whereas I have at least 100 watches in 6 smallish dresser drawers, with room for more.

I confess I was thinking more of the waffle-butt problem.

I feel ya, but I'm thinking about utility and what bikes would cover new ground, rather than cover the same ground a little differently. A fattie would get me out more in the winter and even allow me to hit some MTB trails. The casual bike gets me to the grocery store or nearby social gathering and allows me to wear my Rapha sweaters unironically.

Will do. I was first really considering the Power Mirror, but could not find clamp ears in 7X9 for my seat post. Trek only makes 7 X 10, and that is what the fi'zi:k requires. This one was about $200 less than the Mirror after a coupon.

I can't do vintage for a drop bar bike - just a part of me that wants some level of interchangeability with my existing bikes - but I really should look at used bikes for a dapper casual ride.

Bingo. That I do get. I like their stuff, but the team reimbursement is such, it would be seriously silly to go out in anything but team kit at this point.

I had the 7x9 ears - they're hard to find, but they're out there. Well, unless Trek completely changed the rotary clamp between the '19 and '20 model years.
