So the barometer is the original weather app?

This is a great list! I'm trying to imagine the size bags needed to stash all of this stuff.

Dangit, now I need to buy a flannel shirt, AND a flannel collar? Why can't they just let me buy a flannel shirt, with the flannel collar sewn on, like normal? 😁😉

I know what brigands are, but Footpads, are they pads on your feet, or are they crooks?

Late 19th-century gentlemen cycletourists would often every morning put the bulk of their dunnage on the train to their evening's destination.

Conversely, Thomas Stevens went 'round the world with considerably less:

Collars and cuffs were often separate on 19th-century men's shirts. You couldn't always wash your shirt every day, so you carried fresh collars and cuffs (the parts that were visible from under your jacket/suitcoat.

In the age of empires, the powers were fussy about protecting their citizens when abroad.

All-time favorite 19th-century packing list for a minimalist S24O:

"I should be very much obliged if you would slip your revolver into your pocket. An Eley's No. 2 is an excellent argument with gentlemen who can twist steel pokers into knots. That and a tooth-brush are, I think all that we need." - character Sherlock Holmes, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band', Arthur Conan Doyle, 1892

I have no clue what permanganate of potash is or what it is used for, perhaps if I knew I would then ask where to buy some?

On my last tour I rode for a couple days with a gal from Germany, she had an EU flag on the back of her bike, her bike was the bike on the right in this photo of our bikes on a ferry.

Potassium permanganate is an oxidising agent with disinfectant, deodorising and astringent properties. Its chemical formula is KMnO4. It is sometimes called by its common name, Condy's crystals. In its raw state, potassium permanganate is an odourless dark purple or almost black crystal or granular powder.

Potassium permanganate is used for a number of skin conditions. This includes fungal infections of the foot, impetigo, pemphigus, superficial wounds, dermatitis, and tropical ulcers.

IIRC potassium permanganate was the purple stuff that used to come in gigantic capsule-shaped "pills." You put one in a bucket of warm water and soaked your athlete's foot in it to supposedly kill the fungus. It turned my feet purple, then brown, but the fungus on my feet persisted until Tinactin came along.

I don't know what all the hub bub is about.
Remarkably similar to my packing list when sallying forth and I have never been accused of being a dandy.

"Spot on" I say!
