Sad, for sure. I just put things together and realized who he was. I've seen several of his adventures hes' captured on video in past years. I will join the masses in saying how much of an inspiration he has been to so many.

terribly sad thing to hear.
I've followed his videos for years and I find his body of work to be the strongest travelling videos I know of.
His way of connecting with ordinary people was always something that made the most impact on me, and his humilde humble approach to talking to us about his adventures was something I greatly admired.
It always struck me how well he always managed to make his narrative interesting, honest, and none of the usual "pat oneself on the back" "baloney" one sees in most travel vids.

again...what a shock.
I always wondered how his personality was that allowed him to be on his own so much, figured he clearly was a solitary soul, but had no idea that he had his demons this bad.

poor bugger.
again, for those who havent seen his videos, they are fascinating, simple, but a whole slew of them are stunningly beautiful and like I said, I love his interactions with people.
A personal connection for me has been all his travels in Latin America, due to my travels over the years in some of the same regions and similar interactions with regular old people.

a real hard ass, really terrible to think that he was battling with stuff this badly. (of which he never shared online and did that whole common online sharing of "crap", excuse my French)

what a shock to read this.

This is sad news. I also watched many of his videos and was always impressed with how up beat and personable he was.

Maybe it's hindsight, but I did notice a change in the last year of his videos. He seemed more subdued and less sociable.
I will miss him

Just to clarify, it seems he had sleep apnea for several years, which caused insomnia; chronic lack of sleep can do a number on your head and sleep apnea can cause actual brain damage. If you can, donate to a sleep disorders foundation. Here's a tribute.

And go ride your bike.

Wherever you are, Iohan, just keep pedaling.

This news hit me hard today...very sad news to hear this. I watched his travels for years now and he was always a great inspiration to me how he lived his dream. His films always showed a deep love of nature, and the people he encountered along his journey. Rest in peace Iohan...

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

Wow. That's a shock.

I ran into this guy a few years back when I was touring the southwest US. We only talked for a few minutes by the side of the road. He seemed like a really cool guy.

Ride forever, Iohan.
