Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you have any bikes with non-aero levers? It's pretty simple to switch cables around on those, you could move the front brake to the right side temporarily. Who knows, you might end up liking it.

My bikes are split 50/50 on right vs left hand front brake.

I do it. I get stronger, but not heavier. Or less ugly. Actually, I find it a big help for riding.

Got my second eyeball injection today and am now sitting in the dark in excruciating pain. No way the first one hurt this bad. Doc said not to ride today. No crap, I can hardly see to find the bathroom.

Interesting.

About 10 years ago, the kids were doing synchronized swimming with practices 3-4 times/week, so I did have a time period of several months of boredom at the Y, where I did non-serious weight/resistance training 3x/week.

I got a little stronger. I did not gain an ounce. And I did not see any obvious improvement in my cycling. I expect my sprint would have been marginally faster but I don't need to sprint except for the rare dog attack.

I've recently started doing bodyweight exercises to help out my riding.

Found that I'm so weak that I have to do pushups with my knees on the ground if I'm going to get any significant reps in.

I had to start fairly seriously after I had my C-spine rebuilt at three levels back in 2008 and in deadly earnest after I broke off an L3 disc fragment and got into bad trouble a few year later. Initially, I left the legs alone, except for the glutei, concentrating on the core, because I was riding a little, but I started doing a lot of lower extremity stuff last year when I began riding with a group again and noticed an immediate increase in power and the ability to shed stem spacers and feel comfortable in the drops for long periods (posterior chain strength). Now, since the gym closed, I'm doing one-leg rises from a low chair, various bridges for the glutei, and squats and deadlifts with great big elastic bands, and still getting some benefit. My arms, however, are, and always will be, toothpicks with veins.

Oh, and I have found whey protein, taken after workouts, to be helpful in adding what muscle I can with my puny, senescent, testosterone levels.

I'm not even going to discuss how few pushups I can do. See above.

Posterior chain and core is the main focus right now, as is the problem with lots of other desk jockeys like myself.

I didn't even think about using resistance bands for deadlifts - I'll have to dig those out of the closet and give them a shot. I recall from the brief season when I went to a gym regularly that I particularly enjoyed deadlifts more than most other exercises.

Deadlifts can hurt you. and form is important. Actually, form is always important, which is why acclimation is always done slowly, and deliberately. Use your phone and record yourself.

I am right/rear all the way. I would get confused if I changed. But yes, I have one that is non-aero and another set of levers in the bin. I seem to be in the minority, who always reaches for the rear first.
And I ride so slowly these days, and on the dead flat, that I mostly use the brakes only when going(slowly) through villages

I tend to grab the right hand lever for light braking, regardless of what brake it actuates. It's similarly flat here, I could probably go an entire ride without touching the brakes if I wanted to, depending on if there are any busy streets to cross.

dead lifts were always my favorite, bent over close grip barbell rows were second. With the rows it was one of the only excessive I could feel the particular muscles I wanted to engage actually engage if that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense. I know exactly what you mean.

Deadlifts + something for the front of the core would be my "desert island" exercise. When I was rehabbing from my little L3 disaster it took a while to work up to deadlifts, but I credit them with saving me from further serious lower back problems and now being able to ride a > 4" drop in comfort at age 64. Of course the bikes were all different, but I think that's more than I could do in my 20s when I was "racing."

I haven't done standing rows for a long time, but I have done endless seated ones pre-COVID to to train for trimming mainsail on racing boats. Maybe now's the time to try again the bands and tubes, if I can find a pace to anchoring them.
