Stretching the capacity of a SunTour V Luxe?

Howdy, all -

I have a SunTour V Luxe rear derailleur in my parts bin I wish to use. The stated maximum cog size is 24T, and chain wrap is also 24T. Because the bike I plan to use this on requires a claw adapter, can I get it to manage a 26T cog if I use a longer claw? The freewheel and chainring combo I have in mind requires only 21T chain wrap. Is this possible, or should I just hang the long-caged V-GT Luxe on the bike and live with the extra chain length, cage, etc.?

In case it matters, I am thinking of running 39/47 x 13-26 Suntour Ultra-spaced 6-speed.

Thanks!

Try it; it will probably work. If it doesn't, you can always go back to the long cage.

Ditto. I'd be disappointed (in SunTour, not you) if you couldn't get that to work.

It was ugly, and I wouldn't ride it, but I got a V Luxe to successfully shift a 32t in the stand. I think it'll do a 26t fine.

Was that a short cage or a medium cage example?

I didn't know there was a medium cage. I thought it was just short cage and GT. It could have been the medium cage, but I replaced it with a GT to handle the extra chainwrap from the big cog.

I run into references to the VT, and I have seen pix of them - but I have never actually seen one in the wild, ever. And to be honest, this may be the only V Luxe I have ever held in my hands. Now, the V-GT Luxe? Everywhere. That was the stock rear derailleur every shop in the Southeast slapped onto any bike that came in with a busted Simplex. I felt reckless and bold for fitting a 1st gen Shimano 600 to my old Batavus back in 1976 or so ...

Thanks for the information, all of you!

So 4 years later and no update, . Did you get this combo to work. I have a suntour v (model 2900) that I'm thinking of pressing into service.

Well, truth be told, no update because in the end I wound up using the VGT-Luxe! My V-Luxe is in a bag in a box in the workshop, still unused in all its chunky glory ...

Hah, yeah hard to beat a VGT luxe. The V luxe is a fine RD but the suntour "racing" derailleurs tend to top out at 24. I need to rob a shimano titlist RD from one bike to put on a bike I'm selling and I was thinking of replacing it with a v lux. I may just cheat and swap the old 14-28 freewheel to a 14-24.

I am running a V-Luxe with a Suntour 13-26 FW and an SR Apex 36-48 crank. It works fine.
