I have a Sony Walkman AM/FM cassette recorder with two membrane speakers, and I put in in a zipper bag and tape it on the handlebars. I have no problem listening to anything but the news (that's from burnout).

I don't ride on the road with earbuds, especially here in Tennessee (drivers here just can't seem to comprehend that there's a bike on their road). If I did, however, I'd play "Bad Motor Scooter" by Montrose. An oldie but a goodie, featuring a young Sammy Hagar.

Whether I'm running or cycling. Just starting off, or in need of that second wind. This 1983 hit song will do if for me every time.

Speaking of REO, don't mind if I do.

They were a street band when I was in college. Fond memories of REO literally playing on the streets

I have a JBL Charge 3 I bought to use at work on the forklift I drove. My music taste ranges from Patsy Cline to Tool. Wife and I went on a benefit ride here, she kept asking me to turn it down. Folks passing us kept singing along and asked me to turn it up. I have a Blackburn cargo rack and water bottle mount to use on the seat post.

One neat song that could be almost a bicycling theme song is Marty Robbin's "SADDLE TRAMP".
I like it when riding the trainer.
Also, ABBA's "TAKE A CHANCE ON ME".
Cheers

I don't ride on the road, so no issue there. I use a bottle cage speaker and it's super handy because the path users hear me coming without having to use my bell. I typically put it on Pandora's rock classics and let it go. I try to stick to stuff that, as above, is upbeat and good to move the legs to. I have noted a bit of grumpy looks when I have it on the metal station, or play "F" the police....
Granted, music isn't as lethal...but still crossing someone else's boundaries without getting permission to do so.
Sorry...a pet peeve of mine....
As for the music I would listen to *if* that was something I'd wanted to do...I'd take a more spiritual path, so to speak and go with the Moody Blues. Some of their music does, in fact, have a fairly good beat and rhythm to it, and sounds great in earbuds..

I have several self-created sound tracks, mostly movie themes. However, even though I can now play them through my hearing aids, I don't for two reasons: 1, my ears are part of my situational awareness. 2, I don't need to—I have them memorized and play them in my head.

Since this is a judgment free zone (), I love all kinds of electronic music (Future Bass, Big Room, Chill/Liquid Trap is my jam right now ). Sometimes I will plug in on my weekly hill climb. There's almost no cars when I ride up after work, and it's a half hour of suffering, so sometimes I'll play something to keep the energy up.

Podcasts... I can still hear traffic, no problem.
But really, something that's always occurred to me, if I can hear the vehicle that runs me over from behind or sideswipes my blindspot, does it matter?

Mendelsohn's Italian Symphony, No. 4, obviously. Why do you even need to ask?

And I would be pissed at someone else disturbing my wanting to just listen to the wind and more natural sounds around me. It would be like a non-smoker having to deal with a smoker (and second-hand smoke) who is oblivious to being courteous of those around him/her as the smoker puffs away.

I can listen to music without blocking my own hearing and creating that hazard, as well as making others around me aware that I am closing on them and allow them to safely step aside without having to ring a bell or 'shout' at them "on the left" ect. which more often causes confusion and ends up with them stepping into the way. I have actually gotten more complaints out of ringing the bell than my music.
Even with the cigarette thing here you are groaning about how all these people who smoke are "killing" you with their second hand smoke, outdoors...you know, since you can't smoke inside any more (which is good), and in the meantime cars, buses, etc. rolling down the road doing far more damage to you.
Insert grumble about the cost of everyone else's freedoms.

I find it simply confounding that there are people out there who think the rest of us should adjust what we do, in public, for their own comfort. Playing music, in a public place, at a reasonable volume level (and content) is perfectly legal and acceptable unless otherwise posted or out of line with the location (say like a library). My suggestion to someone like you is to either find some ear plugs, or get over yourself just long enough for those few seconds you are being impositioned for the pass.

This isn't some federal case about "everyone else's freedoms" you boorish spit wad. You sound like someone who is so caught up in himself that he doesn't even think about, or care, that there are other people you encounter. If you aren't already, you sound like that obnoxious person at a party (drunk or not) that everyone eventually wants to avoid
You want to listen to music? Fine by me. You want to listen to loud, headbanger stuff? Also fine. You want to truly show your level of intelligence? Mount some kind of video device on your bike and knock yourself out (figuratively and literally). To put it in your terms, your freedoms, as you claim so loudly, are every bit as important as mine. No argument there. And, while it's not illegal, it is discourteous, disrespectful and downright inconsiderate to force others to be wrongly subjected to your personal choices in life. None of us want that. However, when what you do invades my space without asking my permission, you step over a line that shows who you really are.
Put on a set of headphones/earbuds and you can listen to anything at any volume that you want. And you actually show consideration to the people around you.
Otherwise, I plan to avoid you at the next party we both find ourselves. Sheeesh...

You find it confounding? Then I find it ignorant and disrespectful.

If a bus load of kids were walking down the path being, well, kids, are you also going to tell them to "shut up" because you can't hear the birds?
I honestly suggest you look into the laws concerning noise ordinance. In brief, they define what is "an invasion of your personal space" at what times when audible to others.
I call your method of argument the "flip the script". You just turned the lazy susan around.
