Addiction LXXVIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FIFY.

I did the Bon Ton Roulet in 2006 or so. I think we had a rest stop at that park on the penultimate day, which was from Watkins Glen to Greek Peak ski resort via Ithaca. One of my more epic days on a supported tour. Chilly and damp in the morning. Then the heavy rain came. To make matters worse, the ride organizers laid out the luggage in a low point at the base of one of the ski lifts. Some peoples' bags ended up sitting in 5" of water.

BTW...I really hate that "Ithaca is Gorges" slogan. Growing up, someone on my block had the bumper sticker. I thought it was so dumb. When I rode through downtown Ithaca I passed a store with all sorts of merchandise bearing the slogan. I fantasized about burning it to the ground.

Woo hoo - it's pouring! Of course, I'm only woo-hoo-ing because I just finished up my morning ride and avoided it.

I gave up on Chucks, when the price rose above my threshold for cheap kicks.

It’s a dumb slogan. I worked in downtown Ithaca the first time I went to college and never really thought the city was all that “gorges”. Outside of town is pretty but aside from IC and Cornell, it’s a dump.

My Vector 3s are working again, room the batteries out last night, rubbed oil on the contacts and all seemed fine this AM. What a pain in the ass.

I will always have a fondness for Ithaca, having lost the last bit of my virginity there in summer of 1973, when my girlfriend from high school was taking summer classes at Cornell. Definitely worth the 200+ miles hitchhiking and probably even missing the legendary concert at Watkins Glen, which was that weekend.
