Suntour Superbe Pro RD cable clamp bore hole stripped

Anyone ever see the bore hole for the cable clamp bolt strip? Kinda surprised given this groups reputation. Can it be fixed?:

Tap it for a larger diameter bolt

Or try a button headed bolt inserted from the back side so the threaded portion sticks out. Use a nut, and the clamping washer as usual. Andy

You might be able to salvage a button bolt from a donor derailleur along with the nut and clamping washer.

This,^^^ which is perfect for your situation. Or if you don't want to spend $15 for five of them you could make your own with a drilled out and tapped stainless set screw for under $1 that is of course if you already own the tools which you would still need for the EZ lock threadserts. I say use a set screw as it already has an allen head to use as the center guide for drilling out the screw You could use any stainless bolt though.

If you've ever drilled and tapped SS this isn't as easy as it sounds. Not an easy material to work with in a home setting.

Good point. Proper technique with sharp bits and taps make it not too difficult for a little project like this. I learned the hard way how not to do it. Here's one of many links on how to do it properly. Know How: Drilling Stainless Steel - Sail Magazine

I didn't know this was a thing! I also have a dead derailleur that might be salvaged with something like this. Thanks!

No need to use Stainless Steel for this application. The OEM der bolt wasn't SS and corrosion is sure to s**t not why the der's anchor bolt fitting got stripped out.

Having done a few thread insert type repairs I'll say that this one's not the best to try. The amount of threads that the der's anchor bolt fitting will engage the insert is rather lacking. The insert's pitch at 1.25mm/t makes for only a very few threads of overlap. Expanding holes for over sized threads or inserts is not attempt 1 in my book in this case. Andy

I tap the hole out to a 6 X 1.0 mm thread and use a stainless button head screw available at my local hardware store. You may have to ream the fixing plate out a bit but the repair is as good as the original bolt. Just my $.02 worth on the subject. Smiles, MH (The same repair I do for Campy record FD's that have stripped.)
