Everywhere in the mountains where we recreate here is grizzly country. I have seen them when cycling, hiking, backpacking, but most often from inside a car on the side of the road.
Always carry bear spray, make plenty of noise (no bells), and travel in a group. Keep a clean camp, hang your food at night, and avoid travel around sundown.

Like so many things in life, you can follow all the rules and still have a bad result. It is cool to see one in the wild, though. It feels like all is right in the world.

I like that sentiment.

Sign at a trailhead in Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska. Note the language after "IF A BEAR ATTACKS"

Went on a hike with some friends on Sunday to Commonwealth lake in Kananaskis country, Alberta
Changed our departure point from the road as we could see a large black bear browsing in the meadows.
Just past the lake following a rough trail through dense forest, we saw some very large and fresh looking bear droppings. Looked up and about 50 metres away a large grizzly browsing in a meadow.
Turned around and found another destination. Just another day in bear country.
