Use cup from cup/cone BB in place of NDS Cartridge BB cup?

I just finished overhauling an old Shimano LP26 cartridge BB but I seem to have misplaced the plastic NDS cup. If I'm unable to find it I was wondering if it might be possible to use an old steel adjustable cup from a cup/cone BB in it's place? It fits nice and snug onto the LP26 although it does have less threads and doesn't stick out over the spindle as much as the plastic cup did.

Anyone ever try something like this with success?

...I've never tried it, but I'm doubtful it will work well. If you look at one of those NDS cups for sealed units, you can see on the inside where it tapers, like a wedge. This is what holds the cartridge end on that side centered, and locked in place, under the considerable stresses that are exerted on it from the crank arm. I don't think a regular old style BB cup will do that for the long haul.

Ok I found another cup in my parts collection but it's from a 73mm BB and is a bit longer with more threads than the one I lost. Would it be ok to use that with a 68mm BB?

As long as it thread completely with the proper torque and stays firmly in place, it's not a problem. I've replaced a NDS nylon cup with a steel cup from another brand of cartridge BB and it didn't give any troubles (other than taking it out) for eight years (almost 10000km).

As for taking it out, just schedule your periodical maintenance accordingly and make sure to check the BB cups and regrease then periodically. The main reason it was stuck is corrosion after those long years.
