powder coat removal; this is cool....

i've searched and asked around and, of course, plenty of tips on how to. but, i've never seen this mentioned before.

Removing Powder Coating Quickly and Cheaply -- Chopper Surplus

i've got a stem, a crank, and a few bike racks the powder looks like garbage on. chipped and peeling...you know the drill. i tried sanding and painting over at least one rack, but it still looks bleh. i'm gonna try this product on an old jandd rack i have. fingers crossed

I was getting a error warning (not a private connection) when clicking on the link at choppersurplus.com.

After a Google search, Permatex Gasket Remover is the product being sold to do the job.

Removing Powder Coating Quickly and Cheaply -- Chopper Surplus

I don't think copy/paste will be necessary. And I can't see them objecting to a link to their website.

Edit: I have HTTPS Anywhere installed in Brave (or Brave does it automatically), so even the above link fails for me, since there is no SSL/TLS URL for Chopper Surplus. If this happens to you, just edit the URL and remove the "s" of "https".

I got that as well, but as I had no intention of entering personal or financial information, I clicked on "go there anyway" and got "Site not found."

After a Google search, Permatex Gasket Remover is the product being sold to do the job.
Well, that helps. Thanks!

your link doesn't work on this end. it produces the same error as my link above. i think they just really don't want anyone hot linking/copying their stuff...hehe

If you go to the address bar and delete everything before the www, the link should work. Does on my end.

No idea if gasket remover works on powder coating.

yep. that worked on my end, too.

i'm going to pick up some remover this weekend when i'm in that part of town. then, hopefully, i can see what it's gonna do on sunday. it'd sure be cheaper than getting my jandd recoated. their price has gone up over 5% in the last few years. understandable, of course

$12 on Amazon for a 4 oz container. Wonder how many would be needed to do a whole frame? And how much elbow grease would be required (I also couldn’t access the original link, so apologies if these questions were addressed).

a 12oz can will do an engine case. so, probably two 4oz'rs for a frame, at most? i bet one will do all the bits i need to do. and, they make it sound super easy. spray, soak up to 15 min's, and wipe everything off. a second application for areas the first pass missed

Boston Globe and Washington Post? You're so well informed!

Before I did that, I'd have to check mine to make sure I didn't have up carnivalgeeks.org and bigfarmgirls.net.

Let us know how it goes.
I have a powder coated titanium frame from 2005 with clear coat over.
It looks like it did day one.
I don't think I'd want to take that chore on.
But, who knows.

Issue is just that the original link was with HTTPS and their SSL cert is borked or invalid. Try this link with HTTP: Removing Powder Coating Quickly and Cheaply -- Chopper Surplus

That said, acetone removes powdercoat. Benco B17 and MEK will also remove it, but especially with MEK, take proper precautions to protect your lungs. I've never used acetone to fully remove coating, but used it to face BB and clean up threads, etc.

The acetone of today works like it is cut with water… like the fingernail polish remover of old.

used that to remove Schwinn decals in the late 1960’s.

Having had so many frames p-coated just last year, my guess I'll need to know about this in 2041... and won't remember what to use to remove the coating.

apparently it's talked about all over the web on various tinkering forums......
nlerner with a little more detail, as per questions, than the article above....

How to remove powder coating

i may go ahead and try the low VOC stuff since no one really knows. i work on cars, so failing the powder coat i can still use it for something. the low VOC i can get easily in town and it's cheap enough. if it doesn't, i can go to ebay for the regular stuff since it appears to be slowly removed from the market

I wouldn't hold PC in such a high light. Yes, it's hard. Yes, it's durable. But it's merely a coating over the metal, and it doesn't bond with the metal as fiercely as top-coated self-etching paint, so if (a) not finished thickly enough, and/or (b) not topcoated and/or (c) not finished properly at the edges like the BB shell face, seat tube edges, head tube openings, and even the tubing vent holes, OR you chip at one of those locations while installing things, water can easily get underneath the coat and rot things from the inside out without you knowing until CRUNCH, your thing falls in half under you. It's not like paint, which will send up warning bubbles when compromised.

This isn't me hating on PC, it's just a sad reality of the product. I've seen it happen countless times in the offroad vehicle world with tubed vehicle frames, tubular roof racks, step bars, and even A-arms /control arms. We've seen it here on C&V forum at least once or twice since I've been here too ...

If you really care about your frame and it's been PC'ed, make sure you install framesaver in the tubes and, if you can, topcoat with a good 2K clearcoat (Disclaimer: Wear proper breathing apparatus w/2K paint, it's no joke).
