Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Giro d'Italia will start in Washington, DC in 2012!

https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/wash...ing-into-place

An announcement regarding a Washington, DC start to the 2012 Giro d'Italia is imminent, according to reports in the Italian press. The possibility of beginning the race in the US capital was made public after Giro organiser RCS Sport sent its head Alberto Zomegnan to the city back in November.

...

The race is proposed to begin with a prologue, which would take place among the city's most iconic features including the Memorial Bridge which fittingly has two large statues donated to the country by the Italians after World War II. It would also pass by the famed Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington monuments, the National Mall and the US Capitol.

A second stage would stay within the city for a circuit that finishes on Pennsylvania Avenue, and there have been discussions about having an additional two or three stages on the east coast before the race would head back overseas to Italy.

Phenomenally BAD idea! Hard to come up with something so ill-conceived.

May be a bad idea for the riders but, as a resident of the DC 'burbs, I'd love to be able to see some of that race. And no, I cannot afford to travel to Europe to see it.

A couple more East Coast stages possible as well? Awesome! I'm sure something in the NYC vicinity would be on the list.

Will spice up the race a bit and maybe add some interest, at quite the detriment to the riders and the race itself.

screw tv coverage if it really does come to dc, im going to ride the 30 miles from my house in northern virginia to get to the event, sick. If the giro comes here I am riding my ass there for free, no gas no metro(no crashing, amen) this would be great for the popularity of the sport. I have universal HD so I am covered both ways.

If I lived in Italy I would say this is a bad idea. I live in the DC area and I think this is a fantastic idea.

This seems odd to me. Why not just have another, separate race, in the DC area and leave the Giro d'Italia in......Italy?

This is great news for those of us in the USA. What's next a stage of the TDF in Colorado? This would really help in the revive the Coors Classic talks!

that makes no sense, how would the riders adjust for the time difference, or would it be a 3 day tour followed by a 20 day tour a week later?

the only thing that doesn't make sense is this is giro of italia not gira of italia and a section in DC. I would love to see it but I dont think its a good idea.

The better Idea would be a Tour of the Nations Capital and get all the big team and lance over here and have like a 5 day tourney. Or more if that matters, just like tour of cali. This would satisfy allot of people of DC because allot of people love cycling in dc and the suburbs of dc.

I'd have a little more than a 30 mile ride...

Shouldn't they change the name? Maybe . . . "A Brief Tour of the Most Boring Cycling in the U.S. Followed by a Tour of the Best that Italy Has to Offer"?

Granted, "Paris-Dakar" Rally Raid is in South America now. (But then, that's an uncommonly stupid idea, too.)

Well, the Coors Classic took the race all the way to Hawaii in '87 and that worked out well enough for them.

I think this is rather silly on the part of the GdT, but being an American cyclist, I think this is great.

This is the worst idea i have ever heard of. It's supposed to the giro d'italia not the giro d'american suburbs.

Grand Tours regularly visit other countries. This year the Giro starts in Amsterdan. Saying it shouldn't happen because it's the Italian tour is illogical. Not to say that it's not a bad idea because of the time difference, though.

Really bad idea IMO, if I was a pro tour rider I would not be pleased. Jet lag sucks.
