Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BB30 to Standard Converter

I just came back from the Taipei show and I was shown and nice, simple kit that converts BB30 shells into standard road dimensions.

They have them for Shimano, Sram, FSA and Campagnolo crank specs. This means you could use any of the regular cranks from these companies with a newer BB30 frame.

I couldn't decide if this would be useful or not. I don't know if there are really enough people in this situation to make this product fly.

Feedback?

These are similar and they come with their own bearings.

what would be more beneficial would be the opposite. as more and more bb30 cranksets become available, a kit to adapt them to standard bb bikes would be nice. (does something like this already exist??)

I think they're called outboard bearings.

Yes, cartridge bottom brackets have inboard-mounted bearings, but require old-school cranks.

So no-one who has or is looking at a new frame with BB30 thinks that they might be able to use this product?

Too, bad. I met with the two young guys who make it. They seemed like nice guys and were really enthusiastic about their new company.

I would think (and I'm exceptionally new to this) that anyone buying a BB30 frame would want a BB30 crankset. I guess that it would be nice to not limit your options, but... anyone drinkin' the kool-aid is drinkin' the kool-aid, if you know what I mean (my bike is a BB30 model, for the record).

Oh, also - I know that the Cannondale Six Carbon Six has a removable adapter, so it can't be a completely unique idea.

Erm, I thought these adapters were quite common? The Soul Faith bike that was on groupbuy here last year was BB30 and came with an adapter. So did a couple of other BB30 framesets I saw on the interwebz.

Don't most people buy BB30 frames specifically so they can use a BB30 crank? The only reason I can think that this might be useful is if you are in a pinch with a busted BB30 crank and need a quick fix to temporarily run a standard.

My BB30 frame has BB30 bearings and the Wheels MFG adapter. I run standard-spindled SRM for training and my lighter BB30 crank for climb-intensive races (though giving up the data really hurts!)

Ive ran the campy and cannondale adapters, mostly because I like my campy cranks and havent justified ditching them on my bb30 frames.

I don't know what this new product would bring to the table over the currently available options..

Another reason for the adapter is of course, if you already have a nice (non-BB30) crankset and buy a new frame which just happens to be BB30.
Maybe you don't want to run out and buy a BB30 crankset. Or at least not right away.

This is pretty much the first application that came to mind for me.

The second was people who have a groupset already and are looking to upgrade/replace their frames. This would help them. They could then change out the crank or upgrade the groupset later.

Yes, there are other products around but I was wondering if the market could support another one. I'm still not sure.

The market, no matter which market we're talking about, can always support a better product than the existing alternatives.

...or one could shoot at superior marketing.
