I didn't, I said "The only solution I can find is expensive", that being a genuine Shimano part (#Y87008100). If you found a link selling that item for $4, please advise. I don't know if the Campy one is compatible, hence my post.

But it's not "just" a washer--it's a Campy toothed washer!

And I see no reason why it wouldn't be "compatible." Brake bolts are the same diameter.

I'd just buy the Campy washer and use it until you find a reasonably priced Shimano washer--assuming you want to keep it all Shimano, for some reason.

Maybe you shouldn't have linked to the Campy washer immediately following your statement (and in the same sentence) that the only solution you can find is expensive.

Yeah, the post was does anyone have experience using the Campy washer on a Dura Ace caliper. Bike Forums maintains its 100% rate of non germane responses.

I'm more curious about how you destroyed the washer to begin with.

Here you go.

Another £14.32 ($15.86 shipped from UK... still cheaper than ebay)

$12.62 shipped (Two as a set , so $6.31ea)

I'm still trying to find one for you in the US.
Gave up..... the US is a desert if you want repair parts. I always seem to be able to get what I need from the UK.
I believe for economic reasons, the US tends to replace the unit and UK is forced to effect a repair.

OK I'm NOT going to be beaten by this, so I changed search engine....
$14.98 Shipped from Huntington Station, N.Y. (Backorder Arriving Soon)
OK Now I'm just having fun... $11.74 shipped from Utah

Have you tried a bike shop? Is it important to you that it is a Shimano part? Every shop I’ve worked at has had a bin of generic brake washers that go for a dollar or 2 each.

I've seen all of those, the shipping costs are prohibitive. I know how to google. The question was if anyone has direct experience using the Campy one on a Dura Ace caliper.

Any one of the right dimensions should work just fine.

It's a washer. It has teeth. Every one that was suggested will fit the brake bolt. Just buy one--I promise it'll be fine.

Geeze, we aren't talking about whether a 12-speed Campagnolo shifter is compatible with a 9 speed Shimano rear derailleur. It's a washer!

Stupid question.

Looking at the photo I'm wondering why the washer broke that way. Just to check, does your brake bridge have a mounting face with a diameter greater than 12mm? If not (and many don't) the star washer is useless since the rim doesn't engage anything, plus the bolt will bear on the center, fracturing the washer.

FWIW - yes the Campy washer will work. Also, you don't really need these. There's minimal rotational forces on brake calipers and once tightened they tend to stay put. If you want more traction without spending any dough, you can mix a bit of sand into grease and apply between the mating faces. When compressed, the sand will bite into both and prevent any relative movement.

Using a Campy washer on a Shimano bike is letting the Camel’s nose under the tent. This will lead to endless searches for the rest of the group set. I would recommend sticking with Chorus, Record would get real expensive.

You got some great links and advice. This suggestion isn’t one of them.

Just buy the washer. Using sand on your bike is right up there with the worst advice I’ve ever seen. This isn’t a hobby for the cheap.

Sand…seriously?

Steel on steel v carbon on carbon?

Listen…do what you want. Add as much sand to your bike as necessary. Sounds like an insanely cheap and effective solution to most problems.

Often carbon on aluminum, though I imagine it would do fine carbon on steel.
That toothed washer is probably doing more with the paint than the actual fork crown metal anyways.
Sand is a perfectly reasonable and practical solution, assuming we’re talking flat on flat.
If you want to be picky, the industrial way of doing this is with a diamond impregnated washer on a clean smooth surface. They cost around $1 each in quantities of 2M/year, and they aren’t reusable.
