American made square taper crank options

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

American made square taper crank options

Racist, pro- living-wage, xenophobe, clueless patriot, etc. is what filled seven pages of a similar thread started a while back. Only one manufacturer was mentioned. In one post. holy f.

this is not a politics/sjw troll thread- it’s just a bikes thread on a bikes forum for a bike person seeking bike information about bike stuff for biking.

I’d love suggestions for a durable crankset for my sporty ss all-conditions (NE U.S. salt for three to five months) daily commuter.

I do greatly prefer the look of DA & Sugino track cranks over Paul’s silly bmx-looking thing, and I know that I could just spend my truly hard earned beans on one of those instead- I know this. I also know that I could spend a third of what DA/Sugino/Paul/White charge and get something perfectly adequate for transferring force from my legs to my frame & wheel.

What i don’t know is what (if any) MIA options I have for a forged square taper crankset that is reputed to take lots of abuse before succumbing to fatigue and, for ease of chainring replacement, has five regular cr bolts holding the ring on.

Thank you in advance.

Aren’t all Suqino cranks and bike parts made at their factory in Nara city Japan?

Also the White Industries crank is CNC machined, not forged.

I have the White Industries Square Taper crankset and bottom bracket. I would pass on the bottom bracket and get auspicious Japanese brand, which is what I wound up doing anyway after inauspicious WI lock-ring didn't.

Is this all of America or just USA? I think there is a boutique or custom crank mfg in Canada.

I can't remember the last time someone said 'American' and meant anything besides the USA. Nobody says 'America' and means Costa Rica, Canada, or Chile.

Isn't that the truth! Do they not teach geography anymore?

If you would like to mention a manufacturer or two from a country that is not America but is nearby to it, you are more than welcome to.

Praxis is based in Santa Cruz, but the parts are manufactured in Taiwan. I can't think of any other options. (IRD is also Taiwan I think https://www.interlocracing.com/shop?search=crank .)

Rene Herse says "assembled in Seattle" which I think means the parts aren't from the US, but I am not completely sure.

I'll try to remember the one I was thinking of. It may actually have been one of the Scandinavian countries instead of Canada. I realize that's farther away but those folks are a lot like us, only more so.

Phil Wood. https://www.benscycle.com/phil-wood-...od_345/product

It has everything you asked for. After you see the price, American made cranks may not be so attractive.

How could I have forgotten?

Makes my White Industry one (which cost me more than the frame I now hang it from) look almost thrifty.

Does it really have a Q factor of 158.5mm? That seems awfully wide.

No. I think they have a funny way of measuring it.

The Q-factor (and chain line) on GRX is wider.

I've been spoiled by having a 7410 crankset. Everything else makes me feel duckfooted.

Sounds like you need to educate yourself and make your own. All this winning is getting tiring

CNC, not forged, so not exactly everything OP asked for

I have a sand/plaster/graphite casting foundry available to me, along with CAD, CAM, and CNC; but no forge.

I have a set designed in sw which I’ve been thinking of graphite casting to bling with for a month or two.

Yes, I too have been waiting to see the winning trickle down below the Chief Officers of this and that, the chairmen of the boards, and the shareholders, but no dice yet.

You're making the assumption that the OP was born in America.
