Changing rear cassette require new chainset?
Good afternoon!
I've had two or three bike shops mention in passing that if I upgrade a 10 speed 11-28 cassette to a 11-31 cassette, it would require a new chainring as well as front derailleur. (At the time, they were super busy, so i didn't ask them why). I have a 52/36 on the front right now.
Also, this is for a2001 Lemond Zurich.2014 Quintana Roo CD0.1.. any suggestions on how to choose a good chainset?
Thanks!

Unless the chainrings are worn, I can't see why you would have to replace them.
And the front derailleur? The existing one should just work.
You probably need a new rear derailleur to handle the larger cassette. Most compatible is the Shimano 105 10-speed RD-5700 gs, with a max cog size of 32.

There's no reason you'd need to replace the chainrings and FD.
Now going from a 11-28 to a 11-31 you might need nothing, you might need a longer chain and might need a longer RD.
I went from a 11-28 to a 11-32 and needed to change my RD from a short cage to a medium cage. I also needed a long chain.

It is not uncommon to replace a chain when a cassette is replaced. So, you start off with a new unworn chain to minimize wear on the cassette (plus one can adjust the length as needed).
Other parts may or may not be needed, generally determined by the condition.

SlowUphill's Album:
Why don't you upload some photos of your bike (drive side), as well as closeup photos of the chain rings (often easiest to view on the non-drive side, drop the chain if needed).
Also photos of both the derailleurs.

Isn't Campy the only one than makes a 11-31 cassette?

I should've waited til I was more coherent... It's actually a 12-32 cassette I'll be putting on a Quintana Roo 2014 CD0.1 (I was trying to be efficient by combining two issues in to one).
The forums won't let me post photos until ive done ten posts! So I created a url on the tinyurl.com site: just add this after tinyurl.com /avbz6cd6

I find chainrings last much longer than cassettes and chains so typically I replace my cassette at the same time I replace my chain but not usually the chainrings, unless they are visibly showing signs of wear. You certainly won't need a new FD just to replace a chain and cassette.

It seems you have a standard crankset. Maybe, they think you need a compact.
You still don't need to change anything.

Technically, no, you don't. They may have been offering some helpful advice by suggesting you go compact, but there's no technical reason why you'd need to.

I have two different wheelsets for my gravel bike depending on what I’m using it for and the cassettes are not even close in tooth count. At least in my situation, they both run just fine on the same chain.
