That is a beauty. Nice find.

More changes to the '73. I was thinking about sourcing a Campy Gran Sport crankset to go with the derailleurs until this TA fell into my lap. Came on a thoroughly abused Schwinn. The bottom bracket is toast, but I happened to have a Shimano UN-72 here with a 113mm spindle. After receiving a puller from J.A. Stein (nice tool, btw), I got the cranks cleaned up. Unfortunately I had to destroy a dust cap in the process. The Shimano BB worked out great, though. The rings are worn, but not completely dead yet. I'll pick up spares when I figure out what tooth counts I want. Everything was smooth on today's test ride.

My new acquisition--- been looking for one of these root-beer specials for a while:

As found. Some previous owner had upgraded to a Crane GS rear mech and a Suntour Compe-V in front--- one of the "high normal" ones.

Seatpost and stem moved easily, so I made an offer. After I got it home I replaced the Selle Italia Grand Prix TI saddle with an old Wrights I had sitting around--- the Grand Prix was actually pretty comfortable, but the look (to me) is pretty "meh". I also swapped in some different wheels which have Paselas on them (the old tires were the originals and pretty dry!)

Tough light for photos!

This bike looks like is has barely been ridden--- the Nisi Evian rims are completely true, the brake blocks are old and dry but hardly worn, etc. There's some spot rust on the upper surfaces of the top tube, down tube, etc. which is maybe just condensation from sitting in storage for years. I will do the "paper towels soaked in evaporust" thing on the rust, and then maybe an aluminum non-cottered crank? I have an SR Apex, but maybe I'll look for a 70's era Dura Ace to go with the rear derailleur....

Reminded again how much I like the way these bikes ride! By accident or genius, the SC has a very distinctive and enjoyable feel...

Yeah I'd never seen a Crane derailleur in person--- kind of odd and interesting. The other weird thing is the shift levers--- they look to be Suntour power shift levers that were usually stem-mounted: https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.a...104&AbsPos=296
They are by far the longest shift levers I've ever used--- they work well, but they just seem weirdly long. The result is that you barely move the levers to effect a shift-- makes trimming require a safecracker's touch....

I think, given the mods already done, that I'll replace the cottered steel crank with something lighter, and the steel seat pin ditto...

first ride this morning, just got the frame last week and built it up with parts i had on hand. Honestly, it's much more nicely finished and constructed than any of my other Raleighs, I was pretty surprised with how comparatively clean the lugwork is. it's a 1974

My $70 OfferUp find

Cheers from San Diego,California!
I’m happy to share my Super Course. I was fortunate enough to have found this very original I think 1971. Bar tape, brake pads, tire and inner tubes will be replaced. Inside brake levers will be removed. Brooks saddle will be treated to a deep moisturizing. Has a couple of stains that will be handled by leather dye to create a patina.

Nice find! Decals and Capella lugs suggest 1973.

They are Reynolds 531 plain gauge in the 3 main tubes and hi-tensile steel in the forks and stays.

Excellent! Looking forward to reviving this bike. Last Raleigh I owned was in 1983 when I was in junior high school. Started as a frames set and found parts in, come on all you middle age folks out there, “ The Recycler”. God bless my dad, may he Rest In Peace. He would take the time and drive me all over Los Angeles to buy parts. Beautiful memories.
Ahhh!!! I have to admit. My eyes welled up as I recalled this.

Thanks to all who contribute to this forum.

Since you’re looking for the correct Reynolds 531 decal I thought you could use a visual guide. Just like yours, this is a 1973 Super Course. The red one came with tubular tires and was known as the TT model but really it’s the same bike. This is the remnant of the correct decal. So many different versions were made over the years it can be difficult to know which one you need. I’ve even seen some complete sets of Super Course decals for sale on line with the wrong Reynolds decal. I hope it’s complete enough to help.

FWIW, that’s actually not the Reynolds 531 decal shown in the ‘73 Raleigh catalog page for that model:

I do appreciate you showing this nlerner. All I can say is Raleigh catalogs are only good for muddying the water. As I look through this thread most Reynolds decals on the early Super Courses seem to match my example, whenever they are still present and visible, right up through 1973. I’ve never seen a plain gauge Reynolds decal with a diagonal 531 script and I’m not sure one exists. I have however, seen many errors or inconsistencies on mock-up frames depicted in Raleigh catalogs. It looks to me like Raleigh used a Double Butted decal, which this bike is not, in their photo.

Oh, I totally agree. The catalogs seem like rough approximations of reality. But I went down a rabbit hole at one point of trying to figure out which Reynolds decal was actually used on the '73 SuperCourse and definitely found examples of at least two, including the one you show. Raleigh was not known for consistency!

This one is from 1970 and it belongs in this thread if nowhere else. Blue was available only in 1970 and this is the first one I've seen.

More photos and commentary here:

Blue Super Course thread

I bought it from the original owner's son. The hubs had fresh grease when I opened them and the cotters look to be new, so I suspect the BB and headset have been serviced recently as well. That also makes it rare.

Well I finally took my 1976 Mark II out for a ride while the warm weather lasts and it felt like an old friend. The wheels are borrowed until I lace up the new rims to the Luxe Competition hubs. The RD hanger is Huret but the Jubilee RD fitted to it is the Italienne variant, designed to fit Campagnolo hangers and limited to 24T. The FD clamp was broken so I decided to use a pair of Suntour ARX mechs to gain some hill-ability.

I also have many photos of trees with a blurry green bike in the way.

I will repack and check all . The head set seems crusty..

any one know what to do with the little paint chips on the white,? Rest of the green paint looks great.
I was looking for one with the Cappella lugs but this came up locally ..!

White is particularly tricky to match. Bringing the frame to an auto body shop or auto paint supplier will give the best results.
I took on the task of touching up a bike in white with red and yellow splatter. The red was easy, but the yellow had aged to a mustard color, while i had varying shades of white on the rest of the frame due to wear and fading.
