What the heck is this thing?
I'm reducing my very large collection of bike crap...and I'm getting ready for another eBay sales campaign. I was looking for rust remover and I found this thing. I know I bought it at one point in my life, but why? It was cheap ($5.99) and there was a lot of machining work involved, but, was I just out of my mind...or does this serve some kind of purpose that I've forgotten about?

It looks like a modern version of a medieval torture instrument.

Hmmm... clamps on seatpost, mounts water bottle behind seat, extra pivoting hardware to give your butt something to push against?

I'm going with some sort of bag mounting device.
With an anemometer on top to make you feel like you're going fast.

Bottle mount. It mounts to the seat post(why isn't it called a saddle post? Anyways...) and then the other piece clamps to the seat stays for another mounting location. I'm surprised it didn't interfere with the brake caliper or cable?

You are exactly right! Why I have such a thing is another question entirely. Water bottles are supposed to be mounted on the frame tubes, as God intended.

Would it not make sense for this to mount on the saddle rails rather than the seat stays?

although the rails are a better place to mount the thingie, it still won't work on the tandem. That bike has a shockpost in the stoker compartment. Geez, this would be good on a full suspension mountain bike, though...no room for an extra bottle there.
