Vintage Klein Road Bicycle Question
I collect older Klein road bikes, and am trying to dig up info on the differences between a couple early 1980s models.
Does anyone know the difference between the "Klein Team Super" and the "Criterium" models? How about the "Stage" and "Advantage" models?
There's a Klein expert out there that chimes in on occasion - name of "Carsten." If you're there, please let me know. I have other Klein questions as well. Thank you!

The member list doesn't show a member with the screen name "Carsten" and the ones spelled Carstan have registered but never posted. could they be on another forum than BF?

If used properly (which it often wasn't), the "Criterium" label would refer to a stiff frame with a short wheelbase and a high bottom bracket. It would be instructive to compare frame geometries of the various models.

Yeah, I believe he chimes in as a "Guest" from time to time. He commented on my VintageRacingBicycles.com blog once, but there's no other trace of him.
No problem though - I'm getting good responses here from you fine folks.

Team super was the expensive one, with thinner gauge tubing and boron reinforcing tape under the paint. New prices were breathtaking. The stage was top of the line for mortals, still a very nice bike with a little more relaxed geometry. I'm not familiar with the criterium or the advantage, but I think that they were all named for their function, like John said. That makes the advantage good for, um, advantages, I guess.
Don't strip the paint off an early klein unless you are sure that it isn't a team...

Tom, The Team Super was fairly popular around here. I don't know if it was the only model to have the boron wire/tape on the chainstay, however. The crit bike is likely to have a steeper head tube angle or a fork with less offset for quicker turning, but I haven't looked at any geometry charts. I look off and on to find an early, pre proprietary Klein to go with my early Cannondales.

These is enough scuttlebutt on the web to make me believe that the stage had boron tape as well as the team super. I think I remember an article in playboy in the early 80s that featured the Klein company...any playboy collectors out there?

Team Super = Criterium + Boron
Stage = Advantage + Boron
As the names imply, criterium had shorter WB and tighter angles than advantage. I believe the Boron was a prepreg and was applied to the fork as well as the stays.
