Well of course you'd leave the FD on with a single chainring; one still has to trim!
(I assume there is an RD as I see the cable, but who knows? Perhaps it is an RD on a single speed?)

Paint

Did you notice the gouges in the paint look like crates in the pic?

If you look at the lower-right of the chain ring you'll see the second inner chain ring. Appears to be a half step setup with the inner ring perhaps four teeth less 9or maybe even two) than the outer.

Right you are, sir. I sit corrected.

Agreed, not sure. Wasn't my original post, but that one picture sure looks like a nice old vintage bike crank. However, with a close tooth count like that I'm sure it was a 'quick shifter' up front.

I think the wacky here is the position of the derailleur cage. It is too far aft of the chain ring. It should fit where the radius of the derailleur is concentric with the radius of the chain ring. Or at least closer than it is.

I am not sure why the fit is so bad. It needs to be further up and forward.

That said. It is a nice bike with a really elegant old steel crank.

Je comprend pas.... that's not very wacky. En fait, it's rather nice.
Je le mettrai dans le rubrique "are you looking for one of these".

Where do they come up with such crap?

It is made of Carbolite, a Carbon Fiber and Steel combination that is the toughest material
pre full carbon fiber magnesium combinations in modern bikes.

Not a Schwinn; check that dropout, the massive slab of sheetmetal with crimped stays is the sign of a cheapo Huffy/Murray. Oh, and slightly overpriced.
