Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

satisfy yourself. You can get replacement parts for any part of a speedplay pedal easily - spindles, bearings, lollipops, etc...

Cleats last a long time - longer than any of the plastic cleats.

I switched from Look Keos to Speedplay Zeros five or six years ago. I haven't looked back. In fact, I've even gone to four-bolt shoes.

I also am pretty good about regreasing my Speedplays as needed.

I don't really get the platform thing either, unless maybe you're riding on a really flexy shoe.

I went from Look to Speedplay decades ago, and the only time the platform size even occurred to me is when Speedplay competitors started using it in marketing and ads. For me, once snapped in, the entire shoe becomes the platform.

And I wear a size 13/47 wide, so if anyone is going to notice a platform problem, it should be me.

Anyway, Speedplay Zero user here. Got it for the float and dual-sided entry. My only gripe is that if you put your foot down and get any garbage on the cleat, it's hard to snap back in. But that's a minor gripe.

I once stopped on the side of the road for a pee break. I did not notice the random pile of dog crap there, and of course I stepped in it. And I didn't actually noticed I'd stepped in it until I went to clip in and encountered some resistance.

I use both Look Keos and Speedplay Zeros. The cleat to pedal connection with Speedplays allows some rocking, and the Looks do not.

I'm not criticizing Speedplay pedals, but the difference is noticeable.

Yes. All the pedal options are fine, at the end of the day it really just comes down to personal preference.

While the platforms have similarities when engaged, I prefer the way the cleat engages with the platform on SPD-SL/Look Style pedals. Different strokes.

Light, reliable, tons of float if you want it, and super easy to get in and out of.

You're right, don't want any of that on a road bike...

This place is way too uptight lately.

It was a joke. Easy.

I didn't realize pedal choice was such a polarizing conversation, but you guys really take offense if someone says anything other than your current choice.

Huh, didn't think my response was that intense.

Certainly didn't take any offense, just didn't agree.

Maybe if you made your jokes more funny..?

It's all good. The sunglasses over straps rule is driving the folks in the Etiquette thread crazy too and no one seems to be picking up on my sarcasm.

I notice rocking when the cleats get worn, but yeah, guess that wouldn't be an issue with worn Looks.

Fwiw, my first Keos wore too much under the point of contact with the shoes and developed an annoying click every crank revolution. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Thought it was the bottom backer, then was looking at the chain rings. Finally swapped my Candy 2s over from the MTB and it went away.

Got the new Keos with the steel wear plate so hopefully that won't happen again.

I notice the same. I also noticed it with Keos as the cleats wore. New cleats are pretty solid.

I tried speedplays for a bit and hated the huge amount of float and general ****tiness of the pedals (they seize up all the time if you are not careful. never an issue for me because i used to just trackstand all the time, but i had a bunch of teammates and friends who had problems with speedplaus). I switched back to look pedals, and got the 20 newton keo blades and absolutely loved them paired with the no float keo cleats. Float has always annoyed me and always felt so awkward to be able to move your foot around at all times, especially when sprinting.

Speedplay.
3 road bikes.
3 sets of Speedplay.
If they break, I will replace them with Speedplay.

If they sieze up, you have something way wrong (as in ridiculously wrong) in installation. That's not the pedal's fault. First guess is that the cleat is improperly mounted and way over torqued.
