Damn it, Cino!
I pulled a sweet Cinelli 22.0 stem out of my ancient parts box to put on my Moto Grand Record, then realized that it may well be designed for the old Cinelli 26.4 bars.
Two questions: Its not a good idea to still use a 26.0 bar and crank down on the stem? Sounds dangerous
Has anybody ever fashioned a shim that will work? I mean, pretty tight tolerances here.

I wouldn’t attempt to over-tighten it as you’d run the risk of ruining a perfectly good stem and clavicle and/or jawbone.
I believe aluminium soda can walls are roughly 0.1mm thick (in the US). You might try cutting and rolling up a few turns over the bars...

I'm running a shim on two bikes now. Eventually I will swap the bars and/or stems out but one of them has been working well for a couple of years so I'm in no rush.

I tried it without knowing - wound up breaking the tightening bolt... then I realized what the problem was.

Vernier calipers are your friend. Being a beer aficionado I can say be careful, cans were once pretty much all +0.1mm and of late getting as low as 0.08mm so you might want to use a little carbon assembly paste or valve grinding compound mix with your grease.

Check in the FS forum - IIRC, I think there's a 26.0mm Cinelli stem listed there - might be the whole stem + bar combo though.
Either way, better to choose the correct thing and sell off what isn't then to make it work when it shouldn't.

I find Cinelli stems prefer Moretti cans or San Peligrino if yours doesn't drink.

Thanks for all the replies/suggestions. Having bikes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2K, (not to mention French bikes!) Ive got a hodgepodge of standards. Some can be standardized, some never will. Im not OCD about period correctness, its all about THE RIDE.
The answer may well be to get an appropriate length 22.2 stem and sand it down to fit the 22.0 French headset

I’ve read somewhere that Cinelli tolerances were pretty tolerant. If the bars are loose, shim. If they are not, clamp ‘‘em down.
