Yeah, I don't know if they did that on purpose, but I was glad they left the plate. The good people at Black Magic Paint were able to put a sticker on it to turn it into this:

Hey all,

It appears I have dropped back into the vintage Pinarello vortex yet again, everytime I think I'm out something pulls me back in. This time it was an estate sale, no one knew anything and this was just sitting along the garage wall.

I was told it is a 1984, every component is Campy , (I'll have a full picture set up tomorrow) it is a six speed freewheel, down tube shifters, a pump peg, 54 cm frame, all original it seems, a Pinarello seat, seat tube, and everything , just about, is pantographed, crank and chain rings, down tube friction shifters,
3 TTT stem and bars, brakes, all are etched with "Pinarello", the bars are wrapped in a cheesy looking nylon appearing thin single wrap, I was about to unwrap it but one of my friends said he thought it was original.

It rides well, everything feels ok, it could use a rear deraillleur, the Z screw land is damaged.

The serial number is simple 'C535"

.Ugly (to me) purple paint, a Columbus sticker, a set of "drillium" levers with white hoods, what chrome there is is in good shape. It may be a chromed frame, I think I see chrome under some of the paint scratches.

Any thoughts on this appreciated, this forum is where all the knowledge is usually.

I had forgotten about this thread. Let me add my 1984 Super Record Special, serial number T467 (obviously most of the components seen here are not original)




Some of the frame details are shared with a few other models. I believe there were at least three this year with the chrome seat stay caps. The decal below the Columbus sticker says "VINCITRICE" and commemorates 1981 wins in the Vuelta and Giro. A 1984 Gran Turismo I had came with this same decal as well as the Pinarello name facing forward on the seat tube (with "Treviso" in much smaller letters on the sides).



My 1984 Gran Turismo also had the same fork crown seen here on the Super Record Special



Lastly, both 1984 models I've owned had this same pump peg (though I'm told it's uncommon on 1984 models)

that had the Denver Spokes decals on the front forks, in perfect shape and I scraped them off...I should have checked first!

This came to me with the floor tag from Denver Spokes as well as a set of Denver Spoke decals on the front fork. I cleaned it up, rode it , sold it, and that buyer from NYC sold it to one of us, who I hope is taking care of it.

a couple more: I was hoping for a more identifiable tubing decal, it's what I got though, seat tube is easy to pull but I'm fairly sure it isn't the SLX tubing. If anyone can tell me what I have that would be great. Campy hubs, NiSi rims,(all perfect). Seat is original I think, that will go in a box if I start riding it though. this frame will carry 25 tires, I took a set from one of my single speeds and there is plenty of room. I need a rear DR, I found an exact replacement on the 'Bay

Yours has dual bottle mounts and a pump peg, but everything seems to line up.

1984 is probably correct, has the pre-'85 serial number format.

Decals probably aren't original (seeing as they are still intact.) Columbus decal probably is.

Very nice find.

Edit: the Victory gruppo came out in '85.

Thanks so much for the factory info Mr Pin! I'm going to finish up the whole clean and lube process, put on a set of Gatorskins and start using it. I am undecided about removing and replacing the original bar wrap, kind of a cool touch I suppose., maybe

Are the rims clinchers? Doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot of braking surface there!

I wouldn’t put Gatorskins on it, something more eye-talian would be more suited; Veloflex, Challenge or Vittoria come to mind. What are the tyres on it?

I’d like to see the brake cables routed behind the bars, but I know some like them in front.

Vittoria it will be, I like them. There are some very cool good condition tires on it now, but they are maybe 20's? After riding nothing less than 25's for the last 10 years I can;t look down at anything less and feel good.
I'm running 32's on my Domane, I love that.

I'll take this out on my local MUP in the next few days for a 14 mile jaunt and, if I don't kill myself reaching for the shifters and like the bike, I'll look around for some new, white brake hoods, rewrap the bars and route the brake cables at the same time.

Any suggestions from you CV guys concerning this project is very appreciated. This is also taking away the focus of this thread, maybe I'll move this to a more appropriate thread.

@bykemike - I vote for the Vittoria G+ of any model that sounds good. The ride is surprizingly great. Doesn't matter if you are using clinchers or sewups. The Montello in the stable like both and the De Rosa is anxious to go out on the road with them.

The thick clear outline on the decals looks non-original, but I've had two that were like that. I don't think the 1984 model would have the 1984 Olympic decal, but maybe it was added late in the year. I would expect the seat tube decals to be arranged differently for either 1984 or 1985.

The two '84's I've had both had flat fork crowns. This could be a 1984 model picking up 1985 features early, or it could be an early 1985 model with a frame built in 1984.

Worked away today and got it out to the local trail just as the sun was going down for a short 8 mile run, to check it out. In my usual test get up, shorts with a multi tool in the pocket, t-shirt ,no helmet or gloves, flat pedals and sneakers, the height of cycling fashion.

During set up I found the usual issues, to hit the right seat height the beautiful seat post would be well above the min insertion line so out that came and one of my many other posts go in for the test. Likewise the engraved 3TTT stem goes right to the min insertion line, it will work but just by a hair.

Put 110 psi in each of the skinny little 20 tires checked the brakes and pushed off. Shifting set up by me an hour ago works nuts on, I'm pleased. Quiet and pleasent to ride I just cranked away for a bit, standing on the pedals into the wind, riding in that really high top gear these older bikes have going with the wind. Taking my hands off the bar to shift will take a while to get used to but it is like...umm, riding a bicycle, you get right back into it. Nice bike, I'll keep this and ride it for a while.

It looks like I'll have some nice Pinarello pantographed parts sitting in my stash. I may very well sell them off if I can't ride them. What are the ethics of that approach? Or maybe look around for the same seatpost but longer and the same stem but higher. I'll peddle on this for a while.

It's your bike and you can do whatever you wish with the parts. I tend to keep parts around after I remove them if I think they have a particular affinity to the frame. For instance, I have a pantographed Serotta steam that I removed for fit reasons that's painted to match the frame. Stretching a bit further, I've kept the Super Record parts from my Super Record Special pictured above. My reasoning is that the next owner of the bike will want those things when I sell the frame. But if you think about it, I'm not sure this approach holds up to scrutiny. The next owner of the frame may want those parts, but it's not certain. After all, I didn't use them. The next owner might not either. Whereas if I sell the parts now, whoever buys them definitely wants them and very possibly wants them to complete a bike for which they'd be a perfect fit. So you could hold onto your Pinarello pantographed parts to preserve the possibility of making this bike original again, but in doing so you might be making it harder for someone else to make a different Pinarello original. So maybe it's better to put the parts into circulation.

my Montello bike number is 1S139 has Shimano 600 tricolor all around , Cinelli bars, any thoughts on the year ?, , I am not sure how to truly identify
the bike is 56cm , has the pump nub. Pinarello stamped dropouts on the red over chrome frame. The cables run inside the top tube

I believe they started using Pinarello-branded dropouts in 1989.
