Addiction 2022.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For some reason the feed for "Dr Berg" popped up in my youtube feed. There was a video about how you should stop taking statins and take niacin instead for your heart.

The guy is a chiro and has a HUGE following. Of course if you do a scientific literature search you will see that the data to support Niacin is incredibly weak, while the data to support statins is quite strong and robust. Example: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6481694/

I suppose I should just chalk this up to more fake news, and anyone can now be an expert online.

Comments?
IMHO - chiros have always been scammers and hacks.

I have a doctoral degree, but would you take medical advice from me?

I have no major problem with patients getting chiropractic treatment for their back and body symptoms. It's not really scientific, but if it works who am I to complain? Ditto for things like acupuncture. I consider myself an "open-minded skeptic" on most health related claims.

If you gave me medical advice to quit my job and be a full-time cyclist I might take it!

Eddie Izard has a great bit on chiropractic care.

Ear infection - crack your bones
heart attack - crack your bones

My wife and I have had 5 flats between us since we've been in south Arizona. Getting my tire changing practice. 1250 miles between the two of us on non-tubeless tires because both bikes are new and I haven't got around to swapping in TL tires yet. One more flat and I'll be changing this week.

1-construction staple
1- radial tire wire
1- pinch flat
1- glass
1-thorn

That's sucky. Have you noticed more than "usual" road debris?? Riding in shoulders more?? I average about 1 flat every 3-4K miles, so typically 2-3 a year.

I’ve always wanted to go to a chiro, I have a constant need to always crack my back. With that being said, the thought of someone possibly breaking my neck keeps me away.

You can start by asking them to only crack your middle (thoracic) and lower (lumbar) back. Should be very safe.

There are RARE reports of neck manipulation causing injury to the carotid artery and resultant stroke etc., I think that's extremely rare but if you want to be sure ask them to avoid it. I am sure MoAlpha could give more info from his perspective.

I am a huge fan of chiropractors and osteopaths. While living stateside I always chose an osteopath over an MD. I am currently under a YouTube chiropractor's care, for TMJ issues, and getting good results. Also, starting in on snoring issues, possibly today. Same guy.

I run 60-80mm stems, on bikes that are too large for me, by traditional standards.

I very much enjoy a neck crack given by a skilled chiropractor.

MDs have always impressed me as going for pills first. Osteopaths and chiros explore other options first. In most cases, manipulation is all that's needed. With the possible addition of a muscle relaxer. Of course this doesn't apply to stations vs niacin

My Grandfather and two of my Great grandfathers were Osteopaths. The Grandfather uses to say that Chiropractors quit after the first 6 weeks of Osteopathy School.

Mind you, I saw GGF's business card, from the late 19th Century, and the wonders of Osteopathy it extolled had a distinct "Snake Oil" feeling. And his name - Wiley J. Banning - didn't exactly inspire trust, either. But somehow, Osteopathy managed to get in under the modern medicine tent and now as I understand the training and licensing of DO's is similar enough to MDs that they're accepted.

I’ve noticed more sand of course, but these weren’t punctures from grit. Regardless, TL would have plugged all of these easily except for the pinch flat which probably wouldn’t have happened anyway.

I don't have any problem with the treatment of symptoms if it makes you feel better. A needle in your arm, a warm bath, pulling on your limbs and torso - go for it.

But, if a guy with a doctorate in English told you to drink chemo fluid to treat your broken bone, then no thanks. From my experience, chiros think their "adjustments" can cure anything. But, you have to commit to 20 treatments and pay in advance.

Interesting. If I got flats like that frequently, I would likely jump on the TL bandwagon. But since I only get two/year (knock on wood) plus I am a retro-grouch, not ready to drink the kool aid sealant.

I’ve had back trouble all of my life since being hit by a car when I was 13 and fractured some vertebrae which I’m told are now sort of disformed or something. I tried a chiro guy on a friend’s recommendation back in 2013 and he fixed me up after a couple months but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t him but his sports physical therapist who worked with me more than the chiro doc. Seriously, the sports guy was golden.

Oh, no, dude. You never say it. Last time I did, I got 3 in one month.

I suspect that it may more be the factory Trek tires that came on the bike.

Rocks. Rocks are what gets me. Late summer/early fall, for some reason, all the embankments next to the roads start shedding rocks from pebble to fist sized which roll out onto the shoulder. Even in places where there's no real embankment they appear. And for some reason, I am a rock and pothole magnet.
