Serial Numbers for 1985 and 1989 Pinarellos
Is there a database showing 1980's Pinarello serial numbers for specific years? Mine is showing it to be GG613 or GG013 or OO013? I can't tell due to paint pooling and I would have to strip the paint.
Thanks very much.
Thanks very much.

Hi,
I’m actually looking into Pinarello S/N from the late ’70s to ’85, but I can say the following:
In 1985, they switched to LLNNN-type s.numbering from LNNN. I think EE was the first and with D ended the LNNN.
999 pieces of EE, then 999 pieces of FF and we have already arrived at GG. I think 2,000 bikes fit well in Pinarello’s annual production in 1985. Plus, painting of yours (if I saw it well in another thread) is a LA ’84 Grewal scheme, which was a hit at the time. And the frame is without pump peg , which shows '86 or earlier production. The next GG period (if there was one at all 2-3 years later I think it showed other specifications on the Montellos) One point I think is a 1985 Montello. (A few years later, they switched to 1LNNN type numbering.)
PS:
Just one more question: do the little Columbus stickers on the fork have a red or blue frame?

The OP's bicycle is obviously a Montello, so it's no earlier than a 1985 model. The Columbus decals are the pre-1988 style but the palmares decal is a conflicting 1988 TdF version. The frame is quite small. There may not be enough room for a pump and the associated pump peg. It appears to have Campagnolo dropouts, as opposed to the later Pinarello branded dropouts, which would suggest the palmares decal is a replacement and the frame is circa 1985-1986.

This is amazing information!!! Thanks so much. I will give you the long story and make it as short as possible. I hope you don't mind the bullet points as I am short on time. I am a Newbie of course and made the mistake of sending out a whole bunch of Threads... lots to answer!!
- Bought 1985 Pinarello Treviso in Toronto, Ontario from bike store owned by the son of a famous European immigrant cyclist who had his own store as well. (cannot remember name)
- Son said they were the only Pinarello sellers in Canada - that's what I was told and not sure if it was true.
- I had bicycle accident several years later and ended up selling the frame. I purchased the Pinarello Montello frame from same store and they used components from that Treviso. I cannot remember all the details, but pretty sure the forks from the Treviso were damaged from accident. But maybe not, I just cannot remember and both bike stores are no longer there. (A cyclist coming from the opposite direction passed 2 other cyclists on a blind corner and we hit pretty well head on. Big court case, I won, he paid. I bought new frame).
- Fork decals are blue frame and the frame decal is red!!
- Someone from another one of my threads is pretty sure my frame is a 1985 Pinarello Montello because of the 1984 Olympic Win color scheme. I tend to agree that I do have an '85 frame. I think the son from the bike store sold me an old frame in 1989 and stuck 1988 Tour de France decal on it. Unless someone can confirm that they were using that same colour scheme in '89. I attached a close up pic of the serial number. Does that help at all?
Thanks very much your help.

I'm skeptical that Pinarello's serial numbers were in any particular order. From my research it only tells you some vague periods - (X = letter, # = number):
X### = early 80's up to '83/'84,
XX### = '85-'86,
1X### = '87-'89
X### = '89-who knows when.
It's obviously made harder when you're relying on people's memories and while a bike may have been purchased in a certain year, doesn't always correspond to when it was built. I've seen ZZ### serial numbers - you can't tell me they got through the entire alphabet (from E) with 999 frames for each letter over two years!

Hmm, that story sounds like the Cramerotti family who owned La Bicicletta. They did carry Pinarello circa 1989-1990 but I didn't think that they were in Toronto in 1985.

I would like to join the discussion of Pinny SN. I have a bit later one, a Montello. I believe, based on the DA 7403 that it is an early 90's and Bulger Cat. The SN looks like IP 762. Can anyone confirm approximate year?

Hi PIN,
my wife has a Veneto Donna with similar Spumoni color scheme but oval headbadge sticker (the new version) . The serial number is QQ 954 and fitted with a full shimano 1050 6 sp. set that was available in '87 -'88. Based on that, I think 1X ### maybe rather might have appeared first in '88. And this modern-looking oval headbadge sticker was used on pro team bikes between 1988-91.

Do you mean the Columbus decal? I wouldn't put too much faith in that, anyone could have put that on. Yeah the serial number format combined with the catalog image pretty much confirms it for me. How good is Spumoni though?

Thanks! I need to polish a few more pieces, build the wheels, and then I'll be ready to pull it all together. The bike was mounted in the top position of a floor-to-ceiling storage stand that fell over, denting and bowing the top tube. A NOS tube was brazed in, which meant re-chroming the frame.

It was in fact the Joe Gardin family. Joe Senior ran a store on Bloor Street West and later set his son(Joe Junior) up with another down the street. The name was Veneto Cycle. I am pretty sure it was Joe(Jr) Gardin who sold me the Montello. He was a promising cyclist as well and a really nice guy.
I wonder if there is a way to get a copy of the store records from the family? I think I shall give it a try...
