Hello! I thought maybe this forum could help me somehow. I like the forum but I've never signed up to contribute before, so I hope you dont mind me doing that when I need help. Not that I could contribute much tbh, I'm not an expert.
Which brings me to my question
I bought an e-bike second hand but now realise that it didnt come with the key to take my battery off the bike and charge it. I feel like a silly billy for buying it like that, but probably im not the sharpest tool in the bike shed.
The seller isn't responding to my increasingly desparate emails.
Anyway ... Is my bike worthless now? Or is there something I can do.

Most bike batteries can be charged on and off the bike. Can you not run an extension and charge on the bike? If that doesn't work (apartment life, maybe) then what about a locksmith?

As above (if you received a charger), but don't be surprised if the batteries are toast. Also, some locks of this nature can be picked easily (YouTube).

With no keys it may be stolen.
Same with no charger.
Paying a locksmith to pick the lock and make you a new key is the most cost effective. Drilling to lock is another option for battery removal, but finding a replacement lock could be difficult.

One of the odd things about most ebike batteries is that a blank key will open it just fine.
Before you do anything else, try a blank, and make sure it wasn't stolen.

My first thought is; Perhaps you stole the bike as it is not logical to purchase an ebike without a key. Like buying a car without a key to start it.

Youch, that's pretty harsh. Not all e-bikes need keys. Mine doesn't. It does not use a downtime battery and the electronics start with just the push of a button. So, no, this is NOT like buying a car, or motorcycle, where you go nowhere without that key. That being said. Knowing what I do about Li-ion and Li-po battery packs, buying an e-bike from a private seller is not likely something I would ever do. I hope that not having a key is the least of the o.p.'s issues going forward.
