@RiddleOfSteel Those Giant wagon wheels are great! Is it possible to build them up w/ different rims?

My 89 Cannondale Black Lightning, and 97 Cannondale M300 or F300 MTB.

Since this pic, the seat and seatpost off the MTB was stolen, I have replaced it with another black seatpost, but a white/black Selle Italia. Looking at the pic, it would be cool to get some black rims/spokes for the MTB. Then, IMO, it be as cool as the BL..

Thank you. The group was a 7speed Suntour Sprint 3000 I believe with a Suntour AR 52-42 crank. You BL is very nice also. Keeping it stock or changing it up?

The 26" wheels make it look goofy. It's a TT/Triathlon bike too, so the geometry is also atypical, contibuting to the look.

Thanks, Kevin

Hi Apollo--as far as I am able to research (there is scarce info it seems), these wheels where built with a similarly-profiled (I would think identical) FIR deep V rim that was black on the V with a silver/normal brake track. They seem to be extremely uncommon as the ones I have possess Rigida DP18 rims. The spokes are substantial but bladed in the middle--probably 2-3mm thick at most. The blades flare out to a cylinder at the hub and at the rims/nipples with a rubber receiver/spoke-to-rim sealer. To true the wheels, the tire, tube, and rim tape must be removed to access a hex bolt (use an allen wrench).

So in theory one could build a wheelset up with different rims, but given the rarity of spokes, their design, etc; to me you'd have to build/machine new rims and drill holes for the spokes etc, which would be cost and labor prohibitive. The wheels are that bespoke--far out stuff. Painting the rims/hubs a matching-to-the-bike color would be really cool. I know my color combo would look perfect on a black lightning paint scheme!

I typed in "Giant EXT Pro Wheels" into image search and there were some nice close-ups, which is great for the curious!

At this point, I think I will keep it stock. I have changed the seat and tires. Will go for a new wrap.. Also, I took a spill on it and scuffed up the brake levers. It is a stiff ride, but handles well. I was on it yesterday, always a thrill. However, I was tempted by a Shimano 105 brifter group Naw, staying stock, now, if another BL in my size at a good price shows up, I surely will do something with that..

Hi guys, I'm looking for an older Dale to tour with, and found this '87 st400.
The seller doesn't know the size, and is a couple hours away. I'm 5'10", is this frame way to big, or is it worth swinging a leg over? Thanks for the help.

Way too big. If it was close I'd say try it, but it's not. For a 6'3" type person.

This one is closer, and smaller...? A T800, don't know the year, and I think it's a build up with non-original groupo.

If this is too small that's it for my area.

That's a nice ST, but it's a 25". You need to find a similar 23".

I'm thinking that T800 is too small but it's close enough to check into, I'll keep you posted.

Nope, the frame is exactly the way I bought it when new. I do sometimes catch grief from "purists" because of my varied components...

I built my Criterium from a frameset and with a modern 7sp (indexed) wheelset. I use mine to drop purists.

Not poorly done, but quite different sizes.
From what I understand all the varied tube sizes, and offset stuff at the BB was for stiffness...

My '98 has a down tube that's ovalized horizontally at the BB and wraps around the ST, and it's ovalized vertically at the HT, and more or less circular at the bottle bosses. Have a look at page 21 of this catalog: https://vintagecannondale.com/year/1998/1998.pdf Mitering these things must have been fun, especially the wacky MTB's.
